Default Question regarding pads replacement.

I've ordered brake pads front/rear for my gt3.

do I need to get new sensors as well?

is there anything else I need when I replace pads?

any input would be helpful. thanks.

If your brake light came on you will need new sensors.

^^^ what hudsondds said...if the light came on you need new sensors too.

If the light did not come on you can re-use the old sensors but a lot of the time prying them out of the old brake pad they crumble or a wire splits and then you need new sensors....so if it was me I would do either 2 things:

1-take the old sensors and clip the wire at the white plug and solder the wires together and tape them up. This way you never have to deal with sensors again. I did this because I swap my pads for DE's and don;t want to deal with sensors

2- just buy new sensors and replace with the pads

I just ordered some Hawk Ceramic pads for my 2010 C2S. I wonder if they have hokes in the pads for the sensors. I guess I'll find out in a few days.

Mike - are you going to get a 991 GT3, now that they have resolved the engine issue?

Not sure on the 991 GT3...no seats for a 6 point harness and at my level I won't drive the track with out proper safety gear. Plus Porsche is real bad these days about warranty on a tracked car...Chevy with the Vette or Camaro are just the opposite. So lots to think about and we will see. I've dialed back my track events a lot in 2013 and so far in 2014 I've only done 2 track days.

Apparently Chevy's Z28 track Camero is a monster. A little weak on the handling & traction side but a true track car.

Get them added to the order. Cars up on stands or hoist. They are cheap to have on hand if needed.

Yes, I put these on my 2009 C2S a month or so ago. They have the holes and clip-in points for the sensors. If you are planning on removing the sensors from the existing pads (if they aren't worn out), I'd suggest carefully breaking away the pad material around the sensor hole on the old pads and removing the sensors by sliding them out of their mounting point sideways. Otherwise it can be difficult to get the clips to disengage and snap out the way they went in without risking damage to the clip or breaking the plastic on the sensor. Also be careful not to accidentally pry against the area around the sensor when you separate the sticky vibration dampers from the pad (I used a sharpened putty knife). I broke one of my sensors this way and had to replace an otherwise good sensor.

BTW, you'll love the dramatically reduced dusting on the wheels after you change, and what dust there is isn't nearly as black and obvious.

Yep it will be a great car...however I can't drive it because I have a prosthetic leg for a left leg and can't push a clutch with it...thats why I drive PDK. I'm waiting to see what the transmission for the Vette Z07 will be like.

Tim, can you share the part number for the hawk ceramic pads that you ordered for your 2010. I think i will try them too when i need to replace pads.
Storm feedback on feel and performance when you put on the hawk pads?

Rick,

The numbers for Hawk Ceramic Brake Pads for the 997.2 cars are:
  • Front HB667Z.622
  • Rear HB664Z.634
I ordered from Tire Rack for $304.00 and got free shipping. I could have gotten them about $33 cheaper on Amazon, but Tire Rack serves the Rennlist community well and I chose to give them my business. I know if something isn't right, Tire Rack will correct it.

The pads are scheduled to arrive on Monday, 4/21 so it may be next weekend until I can get them installed. I can't wait to see how much these pads reduce the brake dust on the wheels.

Let us know how those work on the 997. We install a lot of them on VW and Audis, but stick to OEM pads on Porsches.

Also OP, it is better to replace the caliper bolts. If your brake light is on, definitely have to get sensors. Even if not, just get new ones for the piece in mind.

Edit: No need for caliper bolts, you are just doing pads.

I can confirm gota911's part numbers for the 997.2 S. (Note the parts are different for a non-S). Those are what I have installed.

Rick, the feel of the pads to me is pretty much the same as OEM, maybe just a little more pedal is needed when they are cold and wet but not much. While I do drive a bit vigorously at times, I generally don't do enough hard repdated race-track style braking to test them anywhere near their limits so I personally can't give an opinion at that level. They work great with no fade in emergency stops as I can attest from an incident last week.

They seem just as quiet as OEM too. I did pop off and reuse the original damper pads that stick to the backing plates since new ones are quite pricey and the old ones still had a lot of stickiness. I've had no problems with squeal or any other issue in the several weeks I've had them on. I should note that I have some hearing problems (likely from my sport bike years and decades of helmet wind noise) so maybe my opinion on noise should be taken for what it's worth.

You can see in the attached photo that I removed the OEM pads very early because I was tired of the wheel dust. For some odd reason, the only photo I took shows the top of the Hawk pads and the bottom of the OEM pads. In any case, you can see the hole and mounting slot for the sensor and the silver vibration dampers on each end on the Hawks.

I'd also like to point out that this is the third car I've used them one, two 911s and a BMW 335i. They've worked great every time.
