Default C2 and options vs C2S?

As some of you may remember I am STILL looking for a C2 - was looking for a Targa and wouldn't mind it but it is almost impossible to find a Targa 4, certainly hard to find one in the color combo I'd like with the options I'd like....sheez it's so hard that I've given up basically. I have pigeon holed myself into the 997.2 models for all kinds of reasons which most of you understand.

Recently, since deciding to consider C2s and C2Ss, things have gotten a bit better. Still finding a base model Carrera with PDK, sport chrono +, nav, XM, PASM, in the color combo I'd like to have (Silver, White with sand beige and maybe some others but no black or red cars) is very difficult. I thought it would make it a lot easier but it hasn't. So yesterday I started looking at C2Ss and then the colors and options started fitting much better but the price of course jumped some - maybe 10k. But I have noticed that by the time I get a C2 with the options I'm looking for I might as well look at a C2S because they are about the same price but have all the options I want.

So my question to the group is this - are there any benefits to a C2 over a C2S? I've thought that the gas mileage would be considerably better on a C2 - can anyone here testify to that? I want to tour the country in the car so maybe mileage is an issue but maybe not? How about resale on a C2 vs C2S - is everyone looking for a C2S? Is there any maintenance issues that would apply to C2S that wouldn't apply to a C2 - is the 3.6 more maintenance free or has it fewer issues than the 3.8?

It seems that a highly optioned C2 2011 is about the same price as a 2011 C2S that already has the options? Does anyone have an idea what you can usually get a dealer to come down on any particular car that is around 72K to 75K which looks like what a 2011 will cost. I was really surprised to see this. I am only looking at CPO cars as I believe that a warranty is a big plus along with roadside since I plan to be on the road a good bit. If nothing else "peace of mind" is a biggy for me.

There is so much collective knowledge here on the RL I had to ask these questions - I do appreciate your help. I am ready to end the search but want to go in with my "guns loaded" with info. I am hoping that I can get a dealer to come down maybe 4 or 5K on a car with an asking price of 75k as I'd really like to be under 70k if I can.

Thanks ,

Tim

Really just don't want the added maintenance of a turbo and have never considered a turbo - would rather have a newer car covered by a CPO - hard to get that in a 997.1 Turbo....not to mention I can't get PDK tranny which is a must in my situation. So back to the original questions please.

Thanks everyone....: )

Tim, mpg is about the same and no difference in the recommended maintenance schedule for either cars (C2 vs C2s). I do recommend sport chrono for any 997.2 PDK car. The new 991 comes w the "sport" button which is very nice in in-town driving. But the 997.2 PDK cars must have SC for that improved throttle response. It can be added albeit with out the chrono clock on the dash. I have had mostly S cars and 4s at that. So I'm biased towards them but that 3.6 345HP motor is very capable. If you find the right color combo, mileage, and options (PCM NAV w BT is nice) , buy it. GL w your search and purchase and post pics when you get it. There is no substitute!

The C2S will have a higher resale value. I got my 2010 C2S CPO last summer for $70K so you are in the right ballpark. The HP and std feature bump is well worth it and you won't be disappointed.

tim,

imo, basic numbers re straight line performance/mpg between 3.6 and 3.8 is negligable - you won't notice the difference in the real world.

i would look for a combination of options that YOU want as well as a few that will make your car more desirable when it comes to resale (ie. sport chronos, sport/adaptive seats could be deal breakers for some, sport exhaust/leather interior could gain some sexy points as well).

all things considered, an S would be better value (and resale value) for your used car dollar. as a crude example in canada the difference between a brand new base 997 vs S was 20 grand. 3-5 years later in the used market the diff is only about 5-7 grand. the delta may even be less where you are in USA, and for sure the delta between s/non-s only gets smaller and smaller as time goes on.

nobody really 'overpays' for options in the used car market, so as a buyer i think you should try to take advantage of that. when it comes time to sell, you may/may not get the money back for the S options but it'll make your car a hell of a lot more attractive then the sea of competing used 911s.

Thanks for all the input so far - I hope that someone might respond to what I might get as a discount off the asking price for an S. It seems that an S is a better deal in the long run because of the options that come standard.

Randy how many miles did your car have on it when you bought it? Trying to get a read on what I might be able to negotiate down from 75K. I hope I could get the car for 70k that I think for one of the cars I'm looking at would be a good deal.

Thanks again guys

Mine had 10.5K miles. They were asking $73900.

I've seen 2012 model 991 3.4L cars pop up in the high $70k range. For a few thousand more it's worth considering.

Good point but I'm not sure if I want a 991. I kind of like the idea of a real hand brake, hydraulic steering, and I actually think that the 997.2 is made better. Take the sunroof for example - the 991 slides out across the roof - that is a cheaper way to make a sunroof.

I am stretching as it is - you could say "for just a little more" all day long till I get myself into a GT3. Wish I could but there is a limit as a matter of fact I need to stay below 70k.

How did you get them down to 70k? What was your strategy - did you just offer them 70k and they took it?

$70,000 for a 991 sounds like a no brainer to me.

Jeez, I've been looking for a white C2S/GTS as well and have turned away quite a few because they had beige interiors...
