Apply oil afterwards and let it sit overnight just to be safe... the oil will fully soak properly into the filter material that way. Most common error is to spray the oil on the filter, install, then drive immediately afterwards. The oil will not have enough time to soak in properly and may fly out to coat the MAF.

K&N arguments aside to answer the OP the procedure is as follows.
Using a K&N Recharge Kit bought at any auto parts store:
1. Liberally apply the cleaning solution to the filter and let it sit for at least 10 mins
2. Rinse the filter under a stream of water with the water hitting the CLEAN side of the filter. This way the dirt is forced out of the filter.
3. Allow the filter to air dry. DO NOT used compressed air as this will damage the filter. Putting the filter out in the sun works great and placing it on a towel works great as the towel sucks the water out of the filter.
4. With the filter dry apply a light coating of oil to what becomes the dirty side of the filter ONLY. The oil will be sucked in by the filter over time and only a little oil is needed. More is not better but none is not good either.
With this procedure you will be good to go until your next cleaning.

Enjoy whatever you like Nate.
Although I'm wondering how would you know the stock filter sound since your car came with K&N...
Anyway, there's no such thing as " K&N haters " ,only common sense users...
BTW,I make a pledge to install K&N on my car the day some witnesses join me to the Dyno and we test my car with stock and K&N and I see at least 1HP increase with K&N. Scout's honor.
