I am posting this for a friend. His car will spike to upwards of 6k rpms while he is sitting still at a light. He has had it to the dealer and they say they cannot help diagnose unless the problem occurs while at their technicians. To prove it is not pilot error, his wife has video'd an episode (which I will post later).

I work on my own 928, but this car is Area 51 to me. Is there a TPS or likely culprit he can suggest to the dealer?

I don't think so, but they need better service from the dealership. So, go to another one that will do a better job.

I take my p-tech out to lunch every month and he drives the car. He finds gremlins I miss on occasion. It's like getting a low cost check up... works well for those intermittent issues. Eventually the gremlin shows itself when he's driving it. FWIW, your friend's p-dealer should at minimum connect the car to their PIWIS for a diagnostic check.

Are there any other conditions surrounding the event: outside temp, engine oil temp, traffic condition(stop and go), etc. Which car is it, year, PDK or MT, mileage, etc. Any service performed recently? Basically the more detail provided = better odds that someone will recognize the symptoms and might have a recommendation.
