I see a good amount of cases where an engine rebuild happens @ 60k miles or whatever amount of miles. Due to IMS or whatever else reason, besides user neglect.
Do you have to have CPO in order to be covered?
ALSO, will your auto insurance cover something like this?
I see it costs around $8-12k and wondering who actually pays this?

You need to still be covered under the original NC warranty or a CPO for extended warranty which will cover the engine. With that, there will be no need to rebuild as they will just replace your engine with a refurbished one.
Rebuilds are only done as an alternative to buying a new engine because it is cheaper and it's coming out of the owner pocket and not someone else. It is actually a good alternative because you can replace your cylinder with Nikasil liners which are longer lasting as well as bore out and run more displacement. Which gives your a nice hp and torque bump.

^IMS is only one of the many other problems that could happen. Timing chains, cracked heads, scuffed cylinders, worn valve guides, blown connecting rods.

I don't think people are informed that there is a cheaper & better alternative. Personally my m96 is getting rebuilt properly. Even if I choose to get a new engine it will eventually wear out again. I am hoping that rebuilding it properly will give it more durability and cost less when it does require another rebuild due to it not having to have the case split and the block halfs sent out to have cylinders redone.

A remanufactured 997 engine is just under $19k (a little cheaper from Suncoast) from a dealer, plus a few thousand for the install and incidentals. A cheap rebuild is around $13k (no real part upgrades), and a "do it right" rebuild is $20-24k. Used engines are around $10-14k. There is no cheap way out of an engine failure, unfortunately.
