997.1 and 997.2 differences?
I'm in the market for a tip 997 for the wife (yes!!!). I'm a long time 993 owner but don't know anything about the 997. Is the 997.2 worth the extra $10K? Assuming 997.1 needs to have the IMS update to even be considered? Any other gotchas or differences? I'd love to get away with spending $40K, but this is going to keep me in 997.1 territory. Thanks.

I had an 08 997.1 C2S and then bought an 09 997.2 C2S. The differences are dramatic and well worth the extra money IMHO. 997.2 a much better performing vehicle with, in my experience, much fewer maintenance issues.

If you're purchasing an automatic, pony up and get a 997.2. As a life long self-shifter, I wouldn't even have considered an automatic before PDK. The difference is night and day.

The Tip shouldn't be a deal breaker. I've owned 2 4S's, one with Tip and a 2011 with PDK. The Tip was even fun in a 320hp 996. Yes, the PDK is a lot better, but I loved my '03. The IMS is only an issue with the '05 and earlier, afaik.
997.2's have DFI. More horsepower, better gas mileage.

I'm afraid of popping $50-$55K on a 997.2 and taking such a huge depreciation hit in the following years. That thing will ride down to $30K-ish. A 997.1 for $40K won't take such a big hit. Will the wife really notice that much of a difference? She's driving a MBZ sedan currently.

To answer the initial question, the .2 has updated touch screen and interior electronics, exterior lighting, dfi engine (a little more power), and that awesome PDK (as mentioned above). Ok without those items, you should be fine with a .1.

Yes, IMO, the 997.2 is worth the extra $
I had a '04 996 and sold it when my daughter went to college. After she graduated, I began my search for another 911.
I was considering some '08 997.1 C2S cars and some 2009 C2S 997.2 cars. I ended up getting a 2010 C2S with a 6 speed manual transmission that was a CPO car. Here are the reasons I went with a 997.2.
997.2 has:
If you do get a 997.2 with PDK, try to get one that has Sport Chrono. That gives you 3 different shift programs and greatly enhances the PDK tranny.
Good luck with your search!

997.2 has:
- a totally new 9A1 engine which,
- has DFI (direct fuel injection)
- does not have an intermediate shaft, so no IMS issues... EVER!
- has 40 % fewer moving parts
- S has 385 HP
- Non-S has 345 HP
- Refined PASM (Standard on S models)
- Upgraded and enhanced Nav system
- PDK transmission is available if you want it

Good summery of why I went with a 997.2 also.
