Octane preference

Brisbane, Australia - 98 Octane - Generally Shell V-Power...
Didn't realise petrol in the US had such a low Octane rating (although the US may use MON, not RON or similar). We have
- 91 (ULP)
- E10 (10% Ethanol)
- 95
- 98
Its worth noting that the Octane rating does not refer to the amount of Octane in the fuel -its a relative measure of the fuel's anti-knock properties (see wikipedia)

USA uses AKI, which I believe is (RON + MON)/2.
Per the linked article, 95 RON in Australia equates to 91 AKI in the USA.

I'm also in the 91 no ethanol camp. I do understand the reasons for higher octane but obtaining it by mixing with ethanol does not get my vote. Apart from all the "not so greenness" of ethanol, the mix has less energy density than gasoline, around 1MJ less per litre. I could not feel the difference in my old Acura but in my 997 for sure there's one. Worse mileage (1.5-2 l/km more) and less perceived power in the engine with the higher octane ethanol mix (Petro Canada Ultra 94).
I was disappointed after more than 1000km on the higher octane mix, a gas that I regularly used in my old car... No ethanol for me from now on...
