I think this is a common thought, however, DI gasoline engines have been around for a very long time. The 1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SL Gullwing had direct injection.
Basically, all Diesels are DFI in principal but a low volume car like the MB Gullwing was so low in production numbers, the world would not really notice any such problems.
