Default Tire Choice: Cross Country Road Trip

The opportunity for a cross country trip came to me recently, and unless my meeting Wednesday tells me it's not doable, I'll be packing up and pointing the C4S for LA at the end of February.

The Issue:
I currently have Pirelli winters on the car on their own set of wheels. They're going to look like Larry David after this winter, especially after this drive. I'm ordering Pilot Super Sports for summer (my PS2s are shot). I don't really want to bring an extra set of wheels/tires as I don't have a garage to store them in LA and shipping a set both ways just seems like a good way to spend an extra $300+ (est total).

Do I:
1. Keep the car on winters for the drive and in LA. They're going to have 15% left on them when I get there and I'm only there for 2 months before shipping the car back to fresh Summer and fresh summer tires.
2. Start summer early and plan the trip around a break in weather along my route (as best as modern meteorology will allow), then enjoy the car on the proper temp-rated rubber out west.

Has anyone faced a similar issue? Thanks in advance!

Also, below are some photos of the car with winters on because...why not....

Early Winter.

Record snow for Detroit this January. Hence the appeal of Los Angeles.

I agree. Keep the winters on. Even though I took the southern route along I-10/20, there was snow along our route a few days before. It would be easy to find cold weather and even snow/ice this time of year on I-20 and I-40, and even farther south. Have a great time!

Use up the winter tires for the trip play it safe. Its not just the snow thats an issue its the cold pavement too.

+1, you will likely not make it on summer tires.

Thanks for the replies! Looking like winters for the drive and shipping new summers out there. Caving for safety isn't exactly caving. More photos from the road once I push off.

Don't believe the hype, February and March can be very wet here...but it can also be awesome! See you when you get here.

I am not even sure what the question is... if you plan to do the trip now, Winter, if you decide to do it later, then Summer. Simple enough.

Now, there's another added benefit with Winters on a long trip, specially if they're on 18s, they would ride much much better overall so maybe less harsh on a long road trip.
