997.2 Squeal on Start
I've seen few threads relating to 996's and others on this topic. I am getting a high pitched squeal on cold start - it does not persist on normal driving and is definitely a 'new' noise.
I cant see anything obvious that would be causing this. I am assuming its some kind of belt slippage.
Any input would be useful - I'll swing by the mechanic's shop on Monday.
Thanks

Most likely you hear it more when it's cold out, correct? Then it's probably the belt.
But these cars have a self adjusting tensioner so you can't adjust manually. Check serpentine belt for cracks and general wear, check tensioner and pulleys.

Na its like 38 here..engine cold but AT hot and humid.
I think I may have found the issue:
I was picking up pizza's for the kids tonight and the driveway into the shopping centre is quite bumpy and I heard the squeak a number of times. I checked the belt today and it all looked good.
Anyways, the heat shield that sits between the rear bumper and centre muffler seemed slightly 'crinkled' - the bracket on the RHS of the rear is contacting part of the exhaust system and causing that wonderful metal to metal screech. It happens on start as the engine moves slightly when it turns over.
Its not a major issue, more of an annoying noise.
I may have to remove the rear bumper to repair or replace the heat shielding and look at what is causing the bracket to contact the exhaust.
Thanks for the suggestions.
