Default Tire wear too premature??

Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone.

Randomly checked my rear tires today and noticed the insides are worn down to the cords.

2006 C2. H&R springs. Hankook Ventus Evo V12. These tires are only 7700 miles old and used for mixed highway/street commuting on nice south Florida roads. Overall non-aggressive driving, haven't even made it to my first DE or autocross yet. I try to keep pressure as per the owners manual 33/39 with partial load.

I put these rears on when I bought the car about a year ago. My Indy did an alignment at that time and told me it should make tires last longer (previous pair needed replacing at about 10k).

I know these cars eat through rears pretty quickly, but honestly I'm surprised that these have worn down so fast. Could it still be something wrong with my alignment, or should I take it as par for the course?

Merry Christmas.

7,700 is pretty normal on a 911. Those are fairly corded. Unsafe for sure. Park it till new tires arrive.

Alignment might be a bit aggressive.

Thats not normal. Get an alignment from someone else. I would be pissed personally.

Thanks Lex. I figured they'd be good til about 10k or so. I did notice in the past few days that the tires were getting pretty loud, which is what prompted me to check. Definitely parked for now til new tires arrive. Probably gonna try MPSS this time around.

Did the h&r springs lower the height to the car? If so it's prob got too much neg camber and you'll need some hardware to correct.

Yes, the car is lowered. I figures that my indy had adjusted the camber. Could you elaborate on the hardware issue?

I think when you lower the car the toe gets out of whack. My understanding is that the stock adjustments won't quite make it right.

Interesting. My mechanic only works on Porsche, and I would guess that these springs are common enough that he would take that into account. Tomorrow I'm going to give him a call. Let's see what he says.

here:

http://rss.rpmware.com/rss/rss_adjus.../i-398274.aspx

and by chance there are some for sale in the members classified section.

However if you intend to track/autocross and dont mind the wear I'd let it be.

Good luck.

Good info Kosmo and thank you but the links are sold. The control arms and coilover suspension are still available.

33/39? Seems low to me. My '08 C2S wants 44/37 per the placard.

Also, how are you measuring the pressure? The TPMS isn't terribly accurate - I find it to read 1-2 lbs inconsistent and 3-4 lbs low vs. a really good gauge. Keep in mind that the real intent with TPMS is to make sure you know when you're losing air - it's not meant to be a susbstitute for a regular tire pressure gauge.

I agree with what's been written above re: alignment, but I'd also check those pressures with a good gauge - and check the placard in the driver's side door frame for the proper setting. Running too low can definitely accelerate tire wear and wear to inner and outer edges quicker than proper inflation - and it's unsafe and reduces ultimate grip.

Negative camber will toe the car out. Need to adjust toe back in when camber is increased on purpose or by lowering car. Toe will kill tires faster than camber.

It is alignment related.

Incorrect rear toe.

Usually get 20K miles from the rear tires on both of my cars. One time I managed to get only 8K miles from my Turbos' rear tires the rear toe was the culprit.

With the suspension mods the tech may not be able to bring the alignment into spec. it would help if you had the alignment printout with the before and after settings.
