Default 2006 997 Squeaky Brakes

I had recently purchased a 2006 997 with 27k miles on it. The rotors appear to have gotten "lot rot" from sitting a month or two at the dealership in South Texas where it was raining quite a bit. They are definitely a bit rusty but the rust seems to have gone away after driving it.

The brakes work fine but they squeak when slowing down close to 0-10 mph. I've tried shaking the dust off the brakes by driving backwards to about 15-20 mph and tapping the brakes. It seems to work for a few stops but then they get squeaky again.

Do I need new brake pads or do you think the rotors need to be replaced too?

Drive it harder. Or maybe it has track pads on.

if you do not know how to work on brakes take it to a mechanic. if they have much pad life you can try disc brake quiet/anti squeal . it goes on the backing plate of the pads

Why do they squeal, because the pads are worn or because the rotors are worn?

I noticed on my 993 that certain pads were very noisy. It was a bit humiliating pulling up to a crowded stoplight. Changed the pads to the "right" ones and the problem went away.

If the car has mostly been used around town at lower speeds the rotors can get glazed which causes light squealing in the final seconds of slow braking. Take it for a rip and brake hard. It will likely sort itself out.

Have you tried simply cleaning them with some brake cleaner? Give them a good dousing around the caliper and pads. Probably just dirty/dusty.

Short story....

My wife drives an Audi a3. She complained a few months after buying it that the brakes squealed. I called Audi and spoke to the service manager. He told me to get on the freeway, get off at the ramp and make sure nobody was behind me. He instructed me to stand on the brakes until the abs a kicked in and the car stopped. He then said, to repeat three times and then if the brakes were still squeaking to call him back. It worked like a charm and now every couple of months when my wife complains that the brake squeal is back, I tell her I'll take a look.
She has no idea how I fix them but is always appreciative.

Just my method. Your results may vary.

My M3 has non-OEM brake pads and they make a little noise. Occasionally I re-seat them by doing 3-4 rounds of taking the car from about 70mph to 20mph hard braking back to back. The sound is significantly reduced thereafter for awhile.

Is there a certain kind I should shop for? Or any will do?

3rd vote for just braking harder to clear it. It's a common problem with high performance brakes. Report back after you've done a few good stops.

I had the same problem on my 08 4S with 19k miles. My tech told me the brakes are fine and some compounds just squeal at low speeds. Try to warm them up by stopping hard a few times when cold. That seems to help with mine. Most of my rust came right off with brake cleaner spray..

Agree with agressive braking to start. If that doesn't work, I'd pull a wheel and check the brand of the pad. If they're Pagid Yellow or something (that's a light track pad) they're going to squeak on the street. If they're a cheap aftermarket pad most likely to squeak as well. If they're porsche pads with porsche plastic dampers behind them I've not had a problem with squeaking if they're properly bedded.
