Default Quick wheel bearing question.

The wheel bearing has an orange seal on one side and a black one on the other. Does it matter which side goes in first? I have seen it both ways.
Thank you!

For other models all I can find is the side with the inscription goes against the wheel hub.The hub should be heated to 100C (max 120C) and the bearing pressed in. The hub is assumed to be off the car both when the bearing is removed and when it is installed.

Here's a cut/paste:

Fit in correct position (groove down).
4 Wheel bearing 1 Heat wheel bearing housing to
approx. 100 °C (max. 120 °C).
Press out wheel bearing with
tubular piece VW 415 A (tool C).
Insert new wheel bearing in correct
position (inscription facing the wheel
hub), and then press again slightly using
pressure piece 9247/3 (tool D) and
tubular piece VW 415 A (tool C).

However, the 997 might be different. So my best advice is visit your local Porsche dealer service department and ask to speak to a tech and get his input.

Yes, it does matter. The magnetic signal for the wheel speed sensor is built into the inner race, the orange side. As Macster stated, the inscribed side, or dark side, does face the hub which means it is inserted first before pressing. You can always check with a magnet against each rubber side to be sure.

OK, I just found it - the black/dark gray seal is ferromagnetic, it provides signal for the wheel speed sensor in 997 and it goes in first. The orange seal faces out. Hope I got it right. Thank you guys!
