997 Carerra S or 996 GT3 ??
After 15 years of ownership and constant building my 944 T into a very competent DE car it’s time to move on. I feel the need for modern technology, improved reliability, and performance. I’ll likely do 8-12 track days a year and occasional local drives.
Is a stock 06 CS a competent DE car? Are many changes recommended or needed ? Are stock brakes components (sans pads) and oil/water cooling up to the challenge ? Is the stock suspension in sport mode akin to what anyone would consider track worthy? The 951 was a 15 year evolution that sucked away many $$ and hours under the lift. I don’t want to repeat that process. I believe the new PFTE seals were introduced in 06, so risk of IMS failure is diminished ??
I came across a 06 CS with 29K miles for mid $30’s. I’ve very interested but I’ve also been keeping an eye out for a 996 GT3 but I imagine that would be $20-25 K more and a longer wait.
Depending on what you own I am sure there are biases but I’m not looking for or expecting definitive answers, just anyone willing to share an opinion and there experience with either or both so I can draw a few conclusions and make a more informed decision.
Hope to add to the stable soon.
Thank you,
Brian

Where did you find an 06 CS with 29K miles for mid $30s? Something's probably wrong with that car...
PM me a link if you like, if you don't want to broadcast the opportunity. I've already got my 06 S, so I won't try to beat you out...
Otherwise, I'm betting the rest of the folks on this forum will tell you to go for the GT3...

That car seems too cheap. I will approach with caution.

I have an 06 S car and have started doing DE events over the past year. In my opinion you would be better served with a 996 gt3. It's purpose built and is more bullet proof in the demanding track driving conditions. My 06s does fine and I have fun but its a street car with a performance background. Not a track car that's street legal.

Yea the car seems a little wierd. BUT back to the subject because there is a fine difference between
these cars. The 996 GT3 is a great car and from what I remember, its a tad bit better than the
997.1. The 997.2 is better than the 996 GT3 and quite the sparring partner for the 997.1 GT3.
I have had all three of these cars, and my 997.2 erased the memory of both my 996 and 997.1 GT3's.
The 997.2 has alot of the creature comfort things that are missing in the GT3, like music (besides whats
coming out the exhaust) and nice comfortable seats etc etc. There were a few threads of 997.1 and 996 GT3 drivers that were complaining that they couldnt pass the 997.2 C2S on the track. Check the milage and see if its right. I have only 11K on my 09 C2S, so its possible that the 06 has 29K miles. It could have been owned by the lil' ole lady from Pasadena.

Since you are looking for a more or less dedicated track car I would recommend the 996 GT3 over the 997 C2S.
Like others, I would be highly skeptical of a $35k 2006 C2S with 29k miles on it. I just bought a very similar car with similar mileage for just under $50k and that seems to be about the going rate for the car and options I purchased.
Was the C2S you were looking at a heavily used track car, or a Porsche Driving Experience car with a bit of mechanical wear? I did see one of those going for pretty cheap.

Gentlemen, thank you for the bits of wisdom and words of caution. The car in question appears to have had a bit of window tinting and some pimp'd out wheels so maybe some unwise modifications, I haven't see the car in person yet. If anyone has the ability to run a CarFax the VIN is WP0AB29986S742753 I'll contact the dealer today to see what they are willing to share on the history and see about setting up a PPI. Anyone have any experience with a Porsche dealer or prep shop in the Wallingford CT area that they would recommend? Not convinced it's the model I'd be the happiest with but it's what the CFO is willing to allow at the moment.

Just spoke with the sales agent, the car was a fresh water flood dammaged vehicle that supposedly was given a clean bill of health by Hoffman Porsche but it does have an R title. I have no experience with this and although I could confidently review a 951 having gone through this I don't know my way around a 911...yet. Not sure what to think of the risk and time investment to verify the condition and still be left with a risk. Maybe I need to just keep looking. Apparently I missed a nice Blue 997.2 C2S just sold last week in this forum.

Stay away from rebuilt title cars unless you get it for 50 percent less of what is currently selling. Also, that blue car that just sold was an incredible deal! I would keep looking and hoping for a similar deal. Good luck!

Pass... spend $5-10K more for a non-flood damaged 997.1 S with some more miles or a clean 997.1 non-S. FWIW, I have 60K miles on my '08 C2S and have had two TPMS sensors failed(battery died) in that time... covered by CPO. A few more miles to bring down the price point is fine provided you come across a well maintained example. Some of us are maniacal re our maintenance... oil changes every 3k miles, brake and gear oil flush annually, coolant flushes (don't believe in lifetime coolant), plug and coil swaps, WP replaced preemptively (known to fail btw 40-50K miles), etc. I'm just about to start doing some DE's with my own car so I cannot speak to how track-able it really is but I've taken some precautionary steps to help it's longevity... added the 3rd radiator for additional cooling and a deep oil sump.
Re which to choose... I suspect the 996 GT3 would be a better track tool if that's what you're really after and you can find one which has not been abused.

get the 996 GT3 - but note there are no electronic "nannies" as in the 997 versions
plus you get the Mezger motor, far more tested / better then the 997.1 or 997.2 motors
