deciphering VIN # IMS failure
So I received the letter notifying me of the IMS settlement on my 2005 997 and I believe I am included because I purchased the very first 997 to arrive at my dealership so it should be a part of the early batch. The engine is also a M96 version. The letter gives ranges of VIN numbers included but I can't make heads or tales of where my VIN fits. Can anyone help me understand what part of the VIN number to look at?
Thanks. BTW, my car has been fine but it still has less than 20K on the clock so I guess I better really start driving it to test the IMS before the settlement expires for me next fall (10 years in service).

Easier to figure by build date.
The letter says "Model year 2001-2005 Porsche 911 vehicles manufactured with an IMS between May 4th, 2001 and Feb 20th, 2005" excluding Turbo, GT2, GT3.
So you have a class vehicle if you have a pre 2/20/05 997

Also, just because those are the covered dates, it's probably not going to cover every single car that might be effected. Porsche would have worked to keep the class as small as possible.

Try to match the first part of your vin with various sequences provided in your letter. Note - ignore the 9th digit (checksum digit), it's has no meaning and it's the number that throws the sequence off. Once you find the matching sequence, concentrate on the last 5 digits to see if your VIN falls in the range.
But if you got the letter, I think it's a given that your car is covered by the class action case.
