If you want a track car, get a GT3, you want more power, get TT, you want newer comfortable, agile sports car, get either the NEW Boxster or Cayman.
I was at the dealer, the new Boxster/Caymans are significant improvement over last gen, while 991 is in some way not as good, they also look way better IMO. If I was in the market for a new car, I'd seriously pay attention to the new Boxster/Cayman, as they are much better value too. 991 optioned is stupendously expensive.
I like the looks of it from certain angles. This is one angle I can't warm up to. I've tried but it's not happening. Sends Panamera and 996 signals at the same time.
I see the 996 clearly!!! I have more angles that I don't like than I do! Not so with 997! Love every angle!
Finally drove a 991 (base) yesterday so figured I throw in my 2 cents. I read a review in either Car & Driver or R&T about the new Boxster that captures my thoughts perfectly- It's a better car, and a worse 911. As far as what it actually is....many improvements over the 997. The headlight selector has an "Auto" mode. The side mirror controls are on the door, sleeker. The rear seats have child seat anchors. The infotainment system is hands down better. For all those things than make it a "car" it's hands down better, and IMHO a better daily driver.
Now is it a worse 911....sure. Although it really doesn't feel any bigger you seem to have less road view. You're more slung back and lower in the cockpit, the 997 is more upright seating. It's smoother over bumps and road imperfections, yet steering still is super responsive and immediate. It sounds amazing.
I think the bottom line is that the worst thing Porsche has done is carry on the 911 name into the water cooled era. Because all anyone does is compare these cars to the 911-993, etc. If Porsche would have ended the 911, and called the water cooled cars the 919 or something....then we could judge them for what they are. Great cars.
As for me....I really want one....too expensive for now....but I'll get one when they come down into the $65k ish range....because it's a really great car.
It was stated in this thread that the 991 sounds better than the 997.2 exhaust. Correct me if I am wrong but the 997.2 was the first 911 with Direct Fuel Injection, correct? I read the 997.2 sounded a bit like a wet fart but never really listened closely in person. Can anyone give an educated comparison between the exhaust note of the EFI 997.1 versus the 991? I have a 997.1 S with PSE and I happen to love the exhaust note...
As for styling and interior, I think the 991 looks very good on the outside although the 997 is a looker as well. The interior of the 991 is better than the 997 in my opinion as it is more refined and luxurious, although I can see where some would think it is too busy as there are a lot more buttons as in the Panamera.
Also, a couple of the 991 I saw at the Greensboro Porsche/Ferrari dealership had a duckbill spoiler on them. I thought it looked silly and screwed up the lines of the car but the dealer said it was a factory option.
