Default Lower end Torque... any easy way to gain some?

On my last track day, an Auto-cross, I really was hoping for more Torque while in slow corners, slaloms, etc... to be able to accelerate, brake, accelerate quickly all in one gear.

Any way to add Torque at the lower end? I am not talking Supercharger, etc... just basic mods like exhaust, headers, intake, etc... answer is probably no, but curious.

Thanks

Why not just downshift?

A good DME flash could improve low end. A longer header and/or smaller exhaust pipe and/or more restrictive muffler does that to most engines, too, but at the expense of upper end. These improvements are minute compared to having a super/turbo charger. If torque is ALL that you want, an electric motor can give you 90% of max torque at almost no revs. Internal combustion engines need some amount of revs to gain volumetric efficiently which contributes to improved torque.

Which "one gear" did you want to remain in? For most autocrosses I find I'm in 2nd gear almost 100% of the time. Are you up shifting to 3rd perhaps before you really need to? Or are you needing 1st in some really tight spots?

2nd... pretty much you're almost always in 2nd, maybe once I could get into 3rd for a very short period before brake/downshift back to 2nd for next cone.

What I realized, specially after riding with a couple of other cars, was that more torque would definitely help improve time. I still managed to get 3rd fastest behind Ferrari 458, and a gutted/track only Subaru...

Can you easily disengage the front wheel drive on a 997 (like you can a 993 for example)?

I installed FVD's long race piped exhaust manifold, 200 cell cats, plus cans then remapped it with their software... I was expecting some loses in torque on the low end(and felt it initially) but the low end torque really kicked in now and instantaneously after the remap. But for a more dedicated AutoX car I wonder if a different MT gear box with a more aggressive gear ratio in the lower gears might do a better job of addressing this.

is there any possibility of changing the rear differential in the 997 economically? Say swapping with an automatic car or a different model Porsche? When I had my MCoupe a very popular modification was to drop the stock 3.15 rear diff and swap in a 3.46 or 3.73 from an E30 BMW. We'd do it in the garage...couple hours, new fluid, maybe $400 in parts, and what a difference it made.

What rev range were you in during all this? 12 o clock or more? Maybe you should be living more in 1st and 2ng gear (rather than 2-3). It's tough to downshift into first when you're rollling but if you blip hard it should slot in easily as the revs fall.

Changing final gearing in this car is a pretty serious undertaking. The diff in this car is inside the trans case.

try to test drive GTS car. if you seriously want more power than now - you got to move up the chain. otherwise just get used to what you got.

AX is done in second gear and mostly above 4k rpm, it should have plenty of torque. downshift to first if second is too low. I know it sucks to try to push into first but it is doable.

My car is flashed, aftermarket mufflers, headers, air intake tube and x-pipe -- gains are placebo and marginal at best (IMHO) -- all in I have spent about 8K CAD. It sounds amazing but I believe the "go" gains are minimal.

Buy a turbo.
