Well, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. If you build a wheelbarrow out of titanium but make the handles out of balsa, it is accurate to say that the wheelbarrow might fail for some other reason but you'd better keep an eye on the handles anyway.
Are there any engineer-members who can dispute what he has to say on a technical basis?
At my last oil service I asked my indy his take on the IMS. He's been a Porsche only mechanic for 25 years and does track support for cup teams here and there. He's seen more than 99.8% of people out there I'd bet.
He said he believes in the LN bearing and he recommends I should do it around 60k miles, when I'm due for a clutch. ( I have 48k now on my 2005) It looks like the part is $695 and a bit extra labor, but not much when you're in there for the clutch. Note that he only recommends to do it when I'm ready for the clutch.
So perhaps this job would be $3k with the clutch included. At this point my car will be 10 years old. Or $300 a year I could set aside. Then the LN should last another 60k miles. I don't see what the big deal is, a bearing is a wear part, it will wear out...just like the clutch. People don't expect the clutch to last 100k+ miles....
Not worth losing sleep over and certainly don't let this issue hold you back from enjoying your 997.
