Default 997.2 Spark Plugs - How high to jack?

Thanx for helping,

I want to change the plugs on my 2009 C2S but am worried I won't be able to jack the car high enough to do the work. I have two jack stands.

What do you think is the minimal clearance I will need (measured at the rear jack points) to pull the exhaust components down for plug access?

I read the posts here and want to do the work... but... I am in my early 50s and the joints aren't as springy as they used to be. I suspect that unless I am on a real lift, I will need to do this work on my back (um... my aching back).

2nd Bonus question: Estimated price for an Indy to do just a plug change? I can get the plugs from Pelican for $63. It can't be more an 1 hour labor at say $100/hour no?

3rd Bonus question: Again, I read the posts on jacking but have a stupid question: I gather that I can't place my jack forward of the jacking points on the rocker and must put the jack elsewhere under the car (to then place the jack stands under the jacking point. Is this true?

Thanx for you help,

Bruce in Philly

plugs job at indy store should be at or under $300.
and I got to tell you - those will be well spent $300. two spots there are very difficult to get to and without a lift it is quite a torture. dropping down mufflers is nothing compared to undoing those 2 coils and plugs where your hands do not fit at all.

I fully concur. It cost me $225 with an independent shop as i provided the plugs ($60).
Not worth ruining your knuckles and loosing your temper.

Working on your car is a bonding experience. I did the 15K/30K service on my 993 all by myself. It took me two weekends, as I took my time and had to buy some extra extensions, wobbles, etc. to get all 12 plugs out.

I swore that I would sell that car before the next 15K service came up, and I did.

I'm sure the 997 is a piece of cake compared to that monster. Even so, these cars are packaged pretty tightly sometimes, and it may be worth it, especially at that advanced age of the OP, to pay someone a few bills to just do it for you while you read a magazine in the waiting room.

Take a look at jack point jack stands. They solve the issue of where to jack up and place the stands.....

There's a point on the rear suspension you can jack from so that you can get the jack stand under the jack point on the rocker. No matter what, you are going to have to be lying on your back for this job. This is not a 1 hour job, no matter how experienced the mechanic is. They will probably charge you 3 hours labor. Maybe 2.5.

P-dealer pricing is typically $1,200. Indy pricing will vary... just make sure they used a torque wrench to get those plugs to seat in properly. Torque by feel doesn't work in this case so I DIY'd my plugs to make sure it was done properly. Although the project was intimidating initial as this is my 1st Porsche... it was a rewarding/bonding experience overall and a bit anti-climatic in the end. If you undertake the project I would recommend investing in a pair of jack stands from JackPoint. That made all my projects safe and that much easier to work on. Get the standard high jackpads if you have stock suspension and a low profile floor jack... As a reference point I'm 47, xtra medium in girth, and have a tweaked back as well. With the standard sized jackpads I can easily slide around w/o issue on my back although it's without the use of a creeper. https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...ackstands.html
