From Lobster Claws to Carrera Sports

From Lobster Claws to Carrera Sports
I am looking into selling my 9/10 19in Lobster claws and purchasing some used Carrera Sport wheels. Does anyone know how much money I should look to receive for my Lobster claws, and how much I should spend on Carrera Sports?

unfortunately, all takeoffs go for very little money. depending on condition, you're looking at as little as $600 for a set of Lobsters. some try to get more, but they have to be in perfect condition. it's a shame really, they're almost not worth selling at those prices. I have a set of Lobsters for sale right now also - haven't posted them yet - as my street rims are now HREs. i'm keeping another set of Lobsters for track/autox rims, just because they're [reasonably] lightweight and you can't replace them for the money you'll get for them.

You will be going from the least valued wheels to the highest valued wheels within the 997.1 line. As you will see, the trade in value will be minimal. Try to sell them yourself to someone perhaps on the 996 forum!

I'm leaning towards keeping the Carrera S wheels after this email from wheelenhancement.
"unfortunately we do not have a set of used Carrera Sport wheels available at this time. A set of new 8.5x19" ET55 and 11.5x19" ET67 Porsche Factory Carrera Sport wheels is $5,200.00, plus shipping. This includes a set of four matching GT Silver Porsche Factory center caps with 3-color crests. Shipping a set of wheels to Chapel Hill will cost $240.00 for UPS Ground service.
Your set of used 8x19" ET57 and 11x19" ET67 Porsche Factory Carrera S wheels is worth $450.00 in trade, provided they are straight & true and in refinishable condition. Please call us at (310) 836-8908 or e-mail us if you have any questions or would like to place an order."

Keep your eye on the for sale section, you should be able to find sports for under or around $2K depending on condition and what tires are on them. Unfortunately the Lobsters do not have much demand.

2 buyers offered me $1200 for my lobsters with Toyo R888 tires on EBay...I turned it down. Greed was my enemy since now it's for sale for $900 and still no one is interested.
For less than the current price, I'd rather keep it.
Someone was selling Carrera sport wheels with used tires for less than $2k just recently.
Carrera sport wheels were my next purchase if I ever did sell my lobsters. Oh well.

I was looking to get rid of my lobsters for a set of Carrera sports to use for autocross. After a few months of looking, it seemed to me that I could maybe get $800 for my lobsters if I was lucky. The Carrera sports with curb rash were often on the order of $2500. So a net price of about $1700 to go from Lobsters to Sports and I only had 1 set of wheels.
The price of a set of new OZ Allegerita was about $1600. So I kept my 19" lobsters and got some 18" Oz Allegeritas. Now I have two sets of wheels for about the same price as going to the Sports. Unfortunately, Tire Rack was out of black, so I got charcoal wheels. The down side to charcoal is neither the black Porsche center caps nor the gray center caps match the in-between color. So, I'm running the OZ caps at the moment. Just a thought for an alternative that might work. The OZ do come in 19" I think...but if you're after a specific look, well the OZ may not work.
Here's the car with the Oz wheels:

Painting the center caps shouldn't cost that much. I had mine painted when I powdercoated my lobsters. Was $25(?) per cap I think.

I don't know what "quintessential" means, but I like the lobsters just fine. I just made mine black. I've changed rims on my last two cars, but still think it's a waste of money unless you absolutely HATE the stock rims. Unlike BMW rims, I haven't seen any Porsche rims that I hate.

it's somewhat amazing to me that the lobsters have such a low value. i guess it's simply a matter of too many of them on the market (and a low desirability). i think they're a great looking wheel and they're reasonably light. what's not to like? i have 2 sets of lobsters right now and the HREs on the car. i'm looking to sell one set, but basically 'giving away' 2 sets is just crazy. i'll gladly make them my track set up instead.

Keep an eye out on the classifieds both on here and Ebay.
I nabbed mine from a seller on here for $1400...
Be patient...
