I guess my enthusiasm for my new (to me) 06 Carrera was apparent, because two of my colleagues bought 997's for themselves earlier this month. We're all over 60 years old (they are a little older than I am), and all first-time 911 owners, in the "always wanted one" category. One friend bought an 05 coupe and the other bought a 10 coupe, both black 6-speeds, both from the same Porsche dealer. We live in different states, so I doubt that we'll ever be together in our cars at the same time, but at least we can trade stories and share advice.

For me, it began with a 1966 Corvair Corsa that I had in high school. A Porsche was always on my wish list, but never within reach financially. I finally bought a Boxster (05 model bought used in 08), which was a perfectly fine car and lots of fun to drive, but it wasn't a 911, so I sold it and got the 911 a year ago. I feel truly blessed to be able to drive such a fine automobile.

Welcome, I am also 60 and have had several friends vow to get a 997 now that I have one. One of them, a lifelong Corvette owner gave me a hard time about my car coming up short compared to the current Corvette, even though he has not been inside of a 911 since the 80’s. Yesterday he called me from the Porsche dealer where he lives and told me that after looking at one he must have a 997.

Great acquisition John. What's the length of your driving season in Bismarck?

I put the Carrera in our daughter's garage on December 1, took it out for a short drive in late January, and didn't take it out again until early April. After driving it for a week or so, we got a big snowstorm so it sat in our garage for another two weeks until the roads cleared again. It's a daily driver now. We have a Cayenne (08 V6 manual) for winter. It's a terrific vehicle for that kind of weather.

I too flipped a Vette owner. Imitation is the highest form of flattery.
