convertible top life cycle
So i got to thinking today. I'm really **** about leaving my car parked anywhere for to long with the top down for various reasons, the inside of the car gets filthy if the wind picks up, unnecessary exposure of the leather to the sun, security reasons and so on. This kinda leads to my question, has anyone every seen or heard of how long the convertible top is rated for as in how many times can it be open and closed before it will require some type of adjustment or repair.

Put my 996 top up and down many times per day for 12years and 50k miles. Never an issue. Kept in garage at home and parking garage at work. Top looked like new when i traded it in.

Oh yeah, one more point, even though we can operate our tops while moving ( I forget how many low MPH....<20????). I'd never do it. Make sure you are always at a complete stop. Less wear & tear and stresses I think. Really, who's in that much of a hurry?

When I bought my 2008 C2S (@10,500 miles), two of the elastic tensioning straps were unhooked. The top still worked fine, but it rattled directly over my head. It took a week to get the right official Porsche fasteners, which in retrospect I think I could have found decent substitutes at the local hardware store, but now it works perfectly with no noise 3,000 miles later. Being in the Seattle area, it's up much of the year, but I have no qualms at all raising and lowering as desired. Seems to me it's like the car as a whole -- you are likely to have more problems by *not* using it than by using it. The only maintenance so far is (a) washing and lint brushing, (b) treating the fabric, and (c) keeping a spray bottle of water and a microfiber towel in the frunk for the inevitable bird droppings.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, i figured the top and mechanism are pretty robust. I have cleaned it and applied the 'Ragg Top' protectant. The water pretty much just beads up off the top.
