Model 997 Custom paint job (DIY)
I recently bought a Seal Grey 2006 911 and wanted something to put on my office desk that looked like my car. So I decided to get a die cast model. I looked and could only find blue or red. Not even silver. So I figured I would break out the airbrush and do a little painting
Starting point is the PORSCHE 911 (997) CARRERA S BLUE 1:18 DIECAST MODEL CAR BY MAISTO 31692, I got of e-bay
Bought the exact color of my car at www.automotivetouchup.com
I got the 2 oz base coat and clear coat.
Broke the blue car down to its pieces. Interior was brown so I painted that black.
Painted the body and doors with seal grey paint with an air brush
light sand then clear coat with a brush then buffed the clear by hand with Zaino compound. I tried to airbrush the clear coat but got all kinds of spiderweb strings coming off the airbrush
Learned a bit about how to use this paint.
I'm happy with the results and have paint for touch ups on the car as needed too

Looks great! I'm assembling a collection of models of current and past cars I have owned and was having someone else do the work but he is so busy he has returned all my models. So I think I will try to do it myself, as you have.
Did you just paint over the original paint or strip it off first? What kind of airbrush did you use? How complicated is this? I can dissassemble the cars myself and the interior painting is easy it is just the exterior that seems tough to get a nice finish.

Here are the steps I used for painting my car
1. wash with soap to remove any oils
2. Scuff up the paint good with Nylon scuff pad (Automotive touch sells them), I used the fine one
3. spray primer (optional step) I did not prime the car, but I had a couple of spots where it would have helped
4. If you prime then sand with a fine sand paper around 600 grit
fill the airbrush paint holder with the paint. I did not need to thin the paint, some paints may need it
I used a Paasche Double Action airbrush, the kind you spray plastic models with. Used it at 30 psi
Do lots of light coats, wait about 5 minutes between coats to dry.
At this stage you are not going for smoothness, its more about color coverage
When happy with color coverage let dry overnight
Remember its just a model car, if you dont like the results just sand and try again
Light sand with 600 , 1000 to get the paint smooth.
If you go through the paint just hit it with a couple more coats
After the paint has dried completely, Brush on the clear coat. Try to get plenty of clear on the brush, be quick as this stuff dries fast.
You should be able to airbrush the clear, I just used a brush. If you try to airbrush ask the paint company how to do it. I tried and it had issues.
Dont try to go over spots with clear again while its wet, wait for it to dry. Sand the clear if you need to get its smooth. 1000 and 1500 grit.
Let the clear dry good and hard overnight.
I then used some Z-PC Fusion Dual Action Paint Cleaner Swirl Remover applied by hand to polish the clear coat. Its really easy. Wax it if you want.
For the Porsche emblem on the hood I grabbed a picture from the web, shrunk it and printed on some decal paper I had. I then coated the decal with Future clear floor finish
good luck

Cool!
I was lucky. My 1:18 Miasto Carrera S came with a Black exterior and Brown interior. Almost an exact match of my real car. Only a few things are off: the model is gloss black instead of basalt black and has the lobster claw wheels, while my car has the Carrera classics.

I was fooled into thinking this thread was about painting the actual car, not a model. I was thinking it was a bit early to find someone doing backyard paint on a 997 given the values but maybe it's a wreck repair.
Nice work!
