I'm debating the replacement of my screen/nav system in my '09 997TT. I want to put something in that has much better navigation and is compatible with my iPhone 5.
1. Is this a good idea or is replacing the screen/system going to significantly depreciate my car?
2. Any recommendations on systems? I've been recommended the Pioneer AppRadio 2.
It would probably be a pretty big upgrade. In my experience I prefer the UI of Pioneer to Alpine, they both sound very good. Keep in mind that if you have Bose, it's hard to remove just the headunit, you may need to do a whole "bose-ectomy" which involves a lot more than the headunit. I believe there is a way to keep the bose amp and speakers, but I don't know if your sound would improve at all.
If you are concerned about depreciation, hang onto the stock headunit and you can put it back if you want when it's time to sell. If I understand correctly you will lose some functionality tied to PCM like nav directions in your gauges, sports chrono integration, and memory seats.
There's no reason why the Alpine would be any cleaner or more straightforward to install than the Pioneer. DelRey seems to do some really good work, but their sales team is also very "fast talking" and has made some pretty ridiculous claims on this site and others, so I'd take feedback like that with a huge grain of salt. I expect the Alpine is just the unit they have stock of, good margin, and are pushing right now.
The Pioneer AVIC Z-150 is just hitting the streets now so I'd wait and take a look at that in person.
I just put in the Alpine W927 in my 07TT. With simple adapters to the OEM harness and use of Most Hur from Nav TV, there was no splicing of wires. You loose ability to do a few things through the PCM, such as fader control, and getting info for radio on center console; but it is no big deal. Instead of radio info i just display miles to empty. Old PCM will just slide right back in if i want someday
Sound - quite a bit better; now i have handsfree, sirus, HD radio, updated nav and Bluetooth audio. Just started reading the 200+ page manual, but so far much better.
local dealer had 2 997TT's.. both 08... both grey.. both coupes w/ black interior.
first one sold in a week for 88k
second one has been there now 5 months, reduced to 68k... still no sale.
difference? the latter one has aftermarket touch screen "system" in it... i would have bought the car but i went to test drive it and was pissed about the aftermarket headunit as A, no pcm, B: dislike the choice, C: if wanted iphone GPS i would hold up my phone..
it's a very personalized thing, and will hurt resale.. it's like when people airbrush their truck... thats your truck for life now.... even at 68k i turned down the car because converting to any PCM is almost pointless/non cost effective.. no telling what else they cut/changed.. will never work like original again.
if you have an 09, then you have PCM 3.0 anyways, why change.. i have PCM 23 and it sucks... 3.0 was a good system..

They recommended the Alpine INE-W927HD. Its supposed to be a cleaner straightforward install.
+1 on the W927HD. I also swapped out the Nav and Bose but ABSOLUTELY agree with the comment to retain all the OEM parts. If I sell my '06 4S it will likely be to move into a '12 GTS or TT in a couple of years in which case I will have all the OEM parts re-installed in the car and move everything over to the new ride.
As someone who'll be in the market for a 997 in the near future, I have to admit that I won't be considering any car with an aftermarket head unit (or any other aftermarket equipment) installed...even if it's offered at a substantial discount. I'd always be afraid that the car was hacked up in some way that would come back to bite me in the future...JMO
