Default S-belt change questions

As part of maintenance, we're planning to change S-belts on 2 997.1 C2Ss. The original belts are in different shape on the cars. One of them looks a little frayed and started developing valleys. The topmost idler pulley also doesn't look flat at all, there are some valleys on it too.

We'll inspect all the shafts for play and replace what's needed when the old belt is off. Should the idler pulleys be replaced regardless because of the unevenness? What's causing that unevenness?

Default Wearing a grove

I have 30k miles on my car, which I drive like it ain't mine. No wear on the pulley when I changed the belt recently. Thinking about your question, I imagine if the bearing is not spinning as it should, it'd cause some drag which then causes minor slippage between the pulley and belt. This might be a reason for the grooving. My pulley bearings felt smooth with no noise, roughness or drag.

I changed mine and all pulleys were flat and even with no lips or valleys. I think if it spins clean when the belts are off you may be able to get away with leaving it in. If you are worried though, Just change it out if you can get to the nut holding it on. Clearance is tight behind the pulleys from what I found. My pulley that is used to slack the belt would turn at the nut making the process harder than it needed to be putting the belt back on. I was able to wedge short open ended wrench behind the pulley to tighten the nut down. That made the process easier to get the belt back on.

Thanks guys.

I guess all the pulleys will have to be changed plus we'll inspect the rest for seizure and play.

Edgy, I read the thread. I guess the original water pump caused the problem, right? I guess we'll have to replace this one.

Not sure if the water pump caused the problem in the first place, but these things should be monitored closely because without a belt, you are literally dead on the side of the road.
