Default Throttle body cleaning

Can you clean the throttle body without removing it from the car? If so how? TIA

On my Audi, if you move the flap you have to do a throttle body adjustment afterwards so beware. I'm guessing you'll need Durametric software or PIWIS to do a throttle body adjustment afterwards but maybe someone can fill us in.

Why do you want to clean the TB?

The TB lives in a pretty clean environment. I know I sound like a broken record but I've had no need to clean the TB in my 03 Turbo with over 106K miles. I've cleaned the TB once in my 02 Boxster in over 265K miles and that was because of a failing AOS dumped enough oil ladened vapor into the intake directly behind the TB to oil it up.

Might add when the replacement AOS failed I never bothered to clean the TB. After the dealer replaced the AOS I just drove the car. The engine ran just fine.

If the intake filter and intake system is in good working order and barring an AOS failure (if you car has one that can fail and possibly oil the TB up) the TB should not need cleaning. Ever. As in never.

I removed the air box at the throttle body to replace the air filter and noticed that there was some gunk build up on the throttle blade edges, it's not clean, can someone advise?

It's held there by 4 bolts... very easy to remove. Here is a DIY re the IPD Plenum install. It requires the removal of the TB 1st so that should provide a reference point. https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...pd-plenum.html

Re the gunk... are you by chance using an oiled air filter? If oiled then try letting the filter sit overnight after you've serviced(cleaned and re-oiled) it. That will ensure that the oils are permeated into the filter. If you're using a paper filter then perhaps your AOS may be failing or the engine oil was over filled at some point.

I'm using a stock paper filter.

I noticed the same thing when I changed my filter a while back. It was pretty minor but it was begging me to clean it. So I sprayed some carb cleaner in there and wiped it with a towel. That was it. Cleaned it up and no problems. No resetting anything.

I've removed it several times in the past w/o ill effect and ultimately replaced it with a GT3 TB. Just be careful if you disconnect the electrical connections to avoid static discharge related issues.
