Default Basic Engine Question Piston Configuration

Hi, Sorry this is such a basic question.

I think the pistons in the 997.1/2 are in a horizontally opposed configuration.

Is this correct?

Yes, the 911 is famous for it's "Boxer" Engine. It's also called a flat 6. Subaru also uses a "Boxer" engine.

Thanks I recently had a throw down with some fool regarding this topic. It made me second guess myself.

was this person trying to say that the pistons don't line up exactly? If you were to put a tube around piston #1 that extneded horizontally in space forever, that tube would not quite enclose it's opposing piston. the reason for this is that the pistons have connecting rods centered on the piston that connect with the crank. The connecting rods are staggered on the crank.

But yes, all 6 of the pistons move horizontally and they are all in the same elevation plane in space (that plane is paralell to the ground).

It's amazing what comes up when you search in Google for "flat six animation". LOL

If you watch the animation carefully you'll note an error. It shows fuel flowing from the injectors constantly, which is not correct, the injections are timed to match the intake valve opening.

Would love to see an animation of the DFI engine too.
