Default GT Silver. . .$3300 option. . .really?

My car is painted GT Silver which I like very much. However I never really understood why this option is priced at +$3300 while other shades of silver are priced at ~+$700.

Is this pricing strategy grounded in the fact that GT silver paint is significantly more expensive to buy from the manufacturer, or that there is more labor required to apply, i.e. more coats are needed or more hand work in preparation, or rather simply a marketing premium, a way to drive more profit for the corporation?

I believe it is more aerodynamic (hence faster) than the other shades of silver.

Hilarious. . . .
But seriously anyone know if additional craft or supply related expense goes into this major upcharge?

The price premium is the same as any other non-standard color. Porsche are quite adept at extracting additional monies from their customers' wallets. Offering colors that are ever so slightly different from colors that can be had for a lot less is just one one of doing so.

I'd really have to hate the standard silver to pay and additional $3300 for what is essentially the same color.

I have an arctic silver 997. I felt that this color was too close to the GT to hold out for the GT.

The Platinum vs GT is a different story. The Platinum absolutely has beige/sand tones in it when viewed in the light. The GT is much more of a cold silver. Didn't like the sandy tones of the Platinum, and had to pony up for the GT in my 991 order. I think I might have stuck with the Arctic if it was still offered, though.

+1. GT silver is good for at least 10hp as measured on a butt dyno.

I agree with that, and I do like the GT better. The arctic was a neutral enough silver to keep me happy, though, while the new Platinum is very Warm.

I do agree that there are visible differences in the shades. Some more than others obviously. Platinum silver is a perfect example. I see a lot of beige in that color. I'm just too cheap to pay for the non-standard-color-wheel colors.

I loved midnight blue. By the time I was purchasing my car, midnight blue had been replaced with dark blue metallic. I couldn't warm up to DMB, so I went with aqua blue instead. Lots of folks see both DBM and midnight as very similar.

Pure marketing, evidenced by the fact that premium and standard metallic colors swap places sometimes with model year changes.

Some really good and comical insights too, thanks everyone!
For me, GT looks almost like polished bare aluminum and that appealed to me.
Next time around, think I would spend that chunk of dough toward full leather or PDK, something of more tangible value perhaps.

I agree. While I do love GT silver, its not something I would pay up for. Full leather + PSE = yes, I would pay $750 for meteor gray but not 3300 for GT silver.

I seen a post on this topic a couple months ago. Someone (maybe the bumper plug guy) with paint knowledge chimed in saying there is noting different about painting process that makes it more expensive, just a color difference upcharge.

Supply and demand perhaps? I'm happy to have GT Silver on my car and do prefer it to the other silver choices.
