Bose overrated
The 7 channel digital amp was upgraded from a total of 325W to 385W. The system in the 997.2 is able to play original 5.1 channel source material without modification; I'm not sure if the 997.1 system can do that.
Buy Other Stereo Equipment
my pcm screen is shot, so I have to upgrade anyway. I know I can replace the screen but that is still several hundred dollars into a new system. I am not such a Prima donna that I can't listen to a Bose in my car, but even my crappy pioneer and homemade sub in my old rattling stang 5.0 sounds a thousand times better. So I am going to get a new double din with gps etc and at least 4volt preouts to have hifi sound. I have been researching hi and low and there is some conflicting info out there.
One thing I have noticed is that my porsche 997 2007 is much quieter than my old mustang, and I have to turn the stereo down a bit to hear the gear shift rpms that are far different than my stang. I'm already getting used to it, yay!
two things to say off the bat:
I know I should just listen to the porsche and the road for full experience enjoyment, stereo not needed.
Stock everything has the best resell value.
now moving on, I could care less about resell value. I tend to keep my cars way past their life expectancy. Also the Bose pcm system is a mistake, and I doubt anyone buying a good used porsche is going to care unless there is some super collector value which mine is not. It's just a basic carrera, not an s, or a 4w, or a turbo...
I love the sound of the road and the engine. I drive with my top slid back and the windows down unless it's raining which is rare in Key West. I still like to listen to Jimmy Cliff and I don't need an audiophile system to enjoy it. I have audiophile at home. I was shocked however at just how bad the Bose system is compared to even the lowest end audio systems in cars. The bass is constricted to the bandpass box, and the whole thing is muddy. I don't need to make excuses for listening to a decent while not perfect system. A good system is great for making the drive an experience which blends well with the road noise and engine sounds.
Right now I am trying to find threads with install pictures for the speakers, amps, subs etc. I found some on the subs and the pcm headunit removal, but nothing about fishing wires to the speakers through the car.
Any ideas on newer double din gps units with decent audio?

I'm fine with the Bose stereo, but where they do stand out is in the bluetooth earpieces for smartphones. I've had them all, Blue Ant, JawBone, Plantronics, Motorola and the Bose is the best for simplicity, clarity and noise suppression. Even with the top down, the other party can hardly tell I"m in a moving car.
I drive my 997.1 pretty much daily, bouncing back and forth between listening to the 200-cell cat/gundo-hacked exhaust and sat radio/ipod/CDs. I have the factory Bose system and it sounds quite poor on every input except lossless files burned to a CD-R (which sound OK). Following in the footsteps of others, the car goes in at the end of the month for sound deadening, Focal speakers/subs, amps and an Audison Bit One. Planning to keep the stock head unit for factory look and Sport Chrono functionality. It still won't match the thrill of the engine/exhaust and it won't be a true audiophile-quality experience , but I am expecting a significant improvement in sound.
There's a really good stereo system that was designed for a 930 cabriolet--probably the best that money could buy--but the stereo, alone, cost (in 1988) what a 997 Turbo S goes for today.
