Default Clutch bleeding question

When bleeding the clutch on a 997, why is it necessary to fully depress the clutch pedal?

When I just bled the clutch, I had about 8 psi pressure on the brake fluid reservoir from the power bleeder when opening the clutch bleeder valve. Upon opening the clutch valve, fluid readily flowed and I thought the line was flushed. Because of this I did not deem it necessary to depress the clutch. Will there be any significant problems if the clutch pedal was not depressed during the clutch flush? Thank you.

Short answer...no. That's the beauty of using a power bleeder. You can go up to 15 psi, but that's it.

I believe by depressing the clutch pedal you get all the old stuff out of the system. I would do it just in case since I don't want any contaminants from the old fluid mixed in with the new.

How/where did you access the valve to bleed the clutch? Did it require any special tools? I've heard that Porsche manufactures a tool specifically for this.

I used a socket to crack the bleeder open, then finger tight, put the hose on, twist open with fingers during bleed, twist closed, remove hose, then tighten with socket. Worked fine.

Since the bleeder is hard to access I found this to work the best. First of course I remove the bleeder cap, then I put the tubing over the bleeder and slide a stubby ratcheting flex head gear wrench over the tubing and loosen the bleeder. Reverse the wrench, tighten the bleeder and remove the tubing. Simple and no mess.

I've been thinking about cutting the side of a tall 9mm(or is it 8mm) socket so I can use a long extension and also have a hose on the bleeder. Last time I used a wrench I cut down to about 2" long.

What's the bleeder size again? 8, 9 or 10mm?

Thanks

This might be a dumb question, but why is it necessary to bleed the clutch?

The fluid deteriorates over time and loses it's effectiveness. It deteriorates with heat, takes on water and becomes more compressible (mushy connection between pedal and clutch). Also, the hoses, cylinders etc do give off particulates as they wear, when you change the fluid you clean the whole system.
