If by first one bar, then 3 bars, then full I suspect you are seeing the effects of the oil getting warm to hot as the engine runs. Even in milder temps I see a change of 2 bars from cold to hot.

You want to be sure when you check the oil hot that the engine has run long enough the oil is really and truly hot. Even though the coolant temp gage might be at the point where it shows "hot" the oil can take a while longer to get up to temp.

The car has to be hot, and then you turn the engine off, turn the key back on without starting the engine, and wait. It takes five minutes to read the level, and there is a count down. That should give you a more accurate reading. They say that the best time to check is when you fill up the gas tank. I do it after returning home from a drive.

But that's the point... it's not about the ambient air temp, it is about the engine temp. the motor has to be at operating temperature. Take it for a drive, get the oil up to about 200 deg, and THEN park it and check.

I like technology but give me a simple dip stick to check the oil in a few seconds instead of this backwards way to perform a simple task.

Question

I currently own a 2012 GTS, a 997.2. I previously owned a 964, 993, and 996TT. All of these models required checking the oil with the engine running at idle. I can only presume from the instructions often given on the forum, that the 997.1 requires the engine to stopped and the oil allowed to settle, just like any other non dry sump engine I've ever experienced. Is this true? Any thoughts as to why its different from the 997.2?
