It is just as easy to inspect the filter after you buy an oil filter cutter. I recommend a cutter and inspection. Kind of fun actually. Several models available for under $50. It cuts the metal filter like a plumbers pipe cutter. Then just remove the element and open. I do it each time. I'm not an engineer, but my understanding is that there may be some filtration benefits to the spin on also.
