Default I don't have it. Do you?

CPO warranty for my 2006 C2 expired back in March this year. Currently, my car has 48k miles on it and has been trouble-free for the past 4 1/2 years. It had 40K service performed early this year at the dealership where I bought my car from. I think I want to keep my car for maybe another year or two until I can afford a GTS.
It's kind of scary to read about some of the major engine issues that a number of us have been experiencing. Would it be a good idea to buy one of those warranties against possible breakdown or is it better to pay for the repairs
out of my pocket? I am curious to know what percentage of you guys bought aftermarket extended warranty after the manufacturer's warranty expired. And if you do recommend purchasing a warranty, which ones should I look into?

I have a 2005 C2S with 70K miles and decided to go warranty free. I reviewed 3 or 4 companies and the cost combined with the exclusions really turned me off. Most of these companies have been in business a while so they routinely pay out less than they take in. I just set aside the money I would have paid each month and when something hits (not if, when) I'll have it covered. If you do go with a warranty shop around - my quotes varied wildly (from 4k - 9k)

I have a 2006 S and also decided to go without. My car has been great and although it has had some minor issues... Nothing near what I would have spent on the warranty. I researched and re-researched and finally just decided that I should just enjoy the car. The statistics are in my favor.

I have an 06 C4S and just going to wing it and drive it like I stole it. If you read all the forums you'd never leave your house! Enjoy it and if it breaks fix it. I just don't see betting against the car. Good luck with your decision.......

Mine has been very reliable and I've chosen to self-insure also. I'm original owner and it's been taken good care of since I brought her home, and like I already mentioned it's been a great example so far.

I am still under CPO, when it expires... if I get any, will ONLY buy one that covers catastrophic failures, with 10K+ repairs.

I don't believe anything is needed if a small thing fails and can be done for a few hundred dollars, BUT, I don't mind coverage if it was economical and covered big repairs only (meaning, big deductible). Not sure who would offer such insurance, but might be worth looking into. I bet stuff that covers every little repair with low deductibles are expensive (similar to CPO coverage), but might be able to find one to cover IMS, or big enginge/transmission failures.

Never did. Bought my car private party. I'll do all my own maintenance short of dropping the engine. If something breaks I'll just troubleshoot/fix/replace to the best of my ability. If I've exhausted all options and can't figure it out, then I'll farm it out to get fixed.

I have a 2006 3.6. In 2009, I bought an extended service contract. $500 deductible, 4 years or until 75k on the clock. It was an exclusionary contract, meaning everything's covered except what's on The List. I paid $2100.

In the time I've had it, repairs have amounted to 2 shift cables, a battery cable, a rear axle seal, and the water pump. Most repairs have been under the deductible, and the contract has covered about $600 from the water pump replacement and $100 from shift cable. I lost money on the contract, which is actually how we want things to be. If life is good, then the insurance we buy is a bad deal. But, I didn't buy it for the small repairs. I can afford those. I bought the contract for the same reason as many of you: Fear of the catastrophic IMS bearing failure.

My contract expires in 2013 and they've started calling me about renewal. For giggles, I got a renewal quote: $7200 for 36 months, $500 deductible. Based on the fact that my car has depreciated in four years by about 30%, but the contract will cost 4x as much, and based on the fact that I've probably got the updated bearing, an extended service contract doesn't make sense. I'll self insure.

+1 for my Daily Driver 2008 C2S. Do all my own Maintenance - if the DIY section keeps growing then I will not have any worries

just like in a casino: only gamble how much you're willing to lose. are you willing to take an guaranteed loss of $3 - 5k just for "peace of mind"? or are you willing to risk a possible loss in the future of possibly 10's of thousands (new engine). for me, i take sure things only when theyre positive and try to outrun (beat the odds) on the negative. i looked into insurance but decided i'd roll the dice.

keep one thing in mind tho - i dont care how many feel good stories you read on here, insurance companies are in biz to make money, not pay out claims. so for every person with a story there must be tons more who never file a claim/never "recoup" their investment.

As this was my 1st Porsche I purchased an '08 C2S with 45k miles still under warranty(1.5 yrs +) with CPO (2 yrs) giving me almost 4 yrs of coverage up to 100k miles. I'm now at 55k miles and coming up on 2 yrs of ownership. For all the coverage available on her... I've only used the coverage once for one TPMS sensor. I perform all scheduled maintenance myself and I trend towards over maintenance... For example, oil changes every 3k miles or 4-5months vs. the Porsche recommended 12k miles intervals. In addition, I like to preemptively replace parts before they fail as they approach their likely MTBF, mean time between failure. So the WP was replaced as a DIY project @ 52k miles and the s-belt @ 47K miles. Certain items should be replaced before they fail. A WP impeller failure, for instance, could send plastic bits throughout the coolant system blocking coolant to critical parts such as the engine block. A hot spot in the engine block could result in a cracked block or catastrophic engine failure. A worn s-belt could fail while you're on a trip between any sizable cities/towns with a p-dealer. So no sense rolling the dice just replace it preemptively. The problem I have with extended warranties is that they don't cover preemptive maintenance... instead they rely on a component failure 1st to address the issue. This fixes the component but can be detrimental to the system as a whole. As much as I'd like to wait for a component to fail 1st then have it covered by my warranties... well I like my far 911 too much to put her through all that. I prefer to preemptive maintain her myself and to perform the job properly to extends her life to it's true potential. Given all this plus the fact that parts are inexpensive relative to labor... my warranties have done little to offset my true maintenance cost. FYI... I've spent $1K in parts to date for oil changes, coolant flush, brake fluid flush, ignition coils and spark plug replacement, air and cabin filters, s-belt, and the water pump. Other than basic oil and filter changes I should be GTG on these components for another 40-50K miles. An AOS may be in order before I hit 100K miles but that is minor. Note: I've spent 5x in mods though.

So when my CPO runs out in 2014 I'll likely not extend. I would consider a catastrophic only policy but only at the right price. Even then it needs to be with a company that will be around long enough to pay it out... break out the crystal ball. You'd be surprised at how many of these warranty companies go belly up. I just got a settlement check of $68 for a $2K policy I purchased for my M3 some 12 yrs ago. The company had been around for 25 yrs and reputable according to my Indy and numerous friends. Well... stuff havens and the company filed Chapter 11 after I had the policy in place less than 4 months of the 6 yrs I had purchased. The best policy I've come across so far is a subscription to Rennlist/Renntech and to enjoy the wrench time with my 911.

Someone said they had am exclusionary warranty but with $500 deductible. The warranty is good, the problem is the deductible. In my experience, unless a DIYer, there are very few repairs on Porsches that are under $500. Someone mentioned water pump and shift cables. Shift cables about $500, water pump $1000-1200. Had he a $100 deductible he would be much less out of pocket. I have found that the deductible amount means very little in the purchase price of the warranty, but means a lot each time a repair is needed. If you get a warranty spend the extra couple $100 for a low or zero deductible.

My experience with no warranty has been about $3000 per year in total for relatively minor repairs, no major catastrophes. Thus if I were only planning to keep the car a year, I would not bother with a warranty that costs $3000. OTOH if I planned to keep the car 4-5 years, I would certainly get a warranty for even $4-5000 as based on my experience it would more than pay for itself.

I opted for the extended warranty on my '07 Targa 4. I took the 5 years full coverage w/$100 deductable. Cost me $5250. I had 49,850 miles on the car when I signed the paperwork. If I would have waited until I went over 50K, the cost would have almost doubled!!. I had a waterpump go at 66K. I was paid for the repai, tow and 1 day car rental minus the $100. I'm glad I chose the extended warranty. I'm covered until 99,850 miles. If I sell the car, I can transfer the balance to the new owner or cash it in. I now have 70,280 miles on the car.
