Default VIN Decoder / Options List

After reading the thread "Porsche dealers defrauding new car customers?", i decided to check the start date of my warranty and ordered a VIN decoder from Suncoast.

I just received the data from the VIN decoder and the warranty starting date was fine. My car is a new 2012 997 C4S with only 6 miles, but I was concerned that maybe the warranty was in fact punched long before I bought it.

The information is very complete, but the data is poorly presented, since it is not in a table but seems more like they did a copy/paste of data into an email. Also, there are many german terms that need translating.

What I did was prepare an excel table and move all data into it. Since the description of the options is either in german or not very complete, I used the list of options codes in Renntech and copy their description into my table,

There are several options/description which I don't understand. Your input will be greatly appreciated:

MNR Type Description
162 C Exhaust concept LEV 2
183 F Super hot country
199 T Battery disconnection switch (where is it?, why is it needed?)
434 C WORK DIRECTIVE F.UEBERSEE-FAHRZG
440 T Antenna diversity
484 C Version for USA (version of what?)
553 C Version for USA, Canada (version of what?)
590 T Steel doors (aren't they all made of steel?)
663 T Fuel pump control
664 C ORVR
708 T 9X7 FL (STEUERUNGS-MNR. F. ABT. PME)
760 V V WITHOUT VTS (FVS)
912 C without ID plate

TIA,

Moises

Hi Al:

I thought this option would be the most difficult to decipher. Guess I underestimated the members of this forum.

Thanks.

Providing a list of all options for a 997 is difficult, if not impossible. Back when I ordered my car in 2005, the ordering guide was 65 pages thick. Today, it's even bigger. I would start with your dealer.

Download a copy of the relevant parts book for your model from PCNA on their website. Near the back of the book is a complete listing of all the various options or items from which the assembly plant builds a car. The list for the 997.2 is 14 pages, single spaced.

Have fun, Merry Christmas!

OT But do you have a link to this? Both a Porsche and a Mini dealer pulled this crap on me in 2008 and 2009 and refused to make good on the warranty length I was sold so I dumped both cars.

This from the 2011 warranty book (you can download it if you're a member of renntech.org)

Time and Mileage Period
This warranty begins on the date the car is first delivered to the first
retail purchaser or the date it is first used as a demonstrator, lease, or
company car, whichever comes first. The car is covered for four (4)
years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Don't know about the Mini but with the Porsche, unless you bought a demo, lease car or company car, the time and mileage start with the date first delivered to the first retail purchaser. So the questions are, are you the first or the second retail purchaser - did you buy new or used?

The car was a new 2008 with 17 miles on the clock when I purchased it from Town Motors in NJ in early 2009 and the paperwork was marked new as well. When I had it serviced another dealer told me the warranty was "punched" in June of 2008. Calling Town Motors did not help, they said all personnel there were now gone and they can not change what is in the computer. Exact same circumstances with Mini a year later. Apparently it was very common in 2008 and 2009 for excess inventory to be put in service (on paper) so dealers could protect there future allotments and sales incentives. In both the Porsche and Mini cases the response was "so sue me" so I just dumped the cars before any warranty issues came up. No doubt I got screaming deals on both cars but would not have bought them if I had knew I was being shortchanged on the warranty by the dealers entering something different in the system than what was shown on the paperwork and confirmed verbally.

It looks like your dealer treated your car as either a demo or a company car and started the warranty period in June 2008 so even though you were the first retail purchaser you didn't really get a "new" car for warranty purposes - I find that a very deceptive practice. I would have argued that you purchased a new car and a new car warranty should have gone along with the purchase - seems to me that "sue" or threat to sue might have helped...at least a letter to PCNA, the BBB and your local group of motor vehicle dealers.
