factory`s policy not to put proper engines into boxsters and caymans is very stupid imho, but, it is what it is. now with 991 it is even worse imho HP wise than it was before. i think it would be better to have an option to put any engine into any trim of any car Porsche makes, but, they obviously have their own preferences.

Is it me, or if both new Boxster and Cayman look better than 991? It sure is a Panamera-like but still, it's more sporty looking than last gen IMO.
If I was a Cayman/Boxster owner, an upgrade is no brainer, while the same cannot be said about 991?!

If Porsche did something else with the Cayman, say give it one engine choice of 300 hp, drop the S level car and R level car, include pasm, a bose radio, leather seats and 19" wheels, and make it decently priced for 49,995 (and you could drive it off the lot for that), would it help bring 30-40 year olds into the sports car market that might be future 911 customers?
I think selling loaded $85k + Cayman Rs isn't working for the company. Look at the sales volumes. The car is too expensive at well optioned R or S spec trim and offers too little in base trim. 265 hp for 51k base with no options isn't drawing buyers to the Porsche brand.

i think an idea behind 'R' was awesome but it was completely destroyed by marketing. an ultra lightweight cayman with no options, good aero and a best 450hp DFI motor would be a blast. instead we got what we got - neither meat nor fish, something 'reduced' not to affect sales of 'prime' models, well, it is plain sad.

What an opportune thread. I was just looking at a Cayman/Boxster the other day and really liked the body style and small managable size. I was thinking of getting one (not instead of but in addition to) my 911. I could see where this could be a fun, little sports car that would compliment my other cars. Probably go for the Boxster as I don't currently have a cab but I do like the lines of the Cayman better.

As time goes by I think there will be fewer folks that, if looking to buy a Porsche, "have to have a 911". I think the Boxter/Cayman will eventually replace the 911 as the "standard" Porsche sports car and the 911 will be moved further up-market.
I am 59 years old and when it finally came time for me to be able to get a Porsche, only a 911 would do as it is what I wanted since I was 16. The newest Boxster ( Cayman as well) is impressive and, over time with younger buyers, I do not think the 911 will remain as the Porsche.

Looks like they are staying upmarket for 2013. 275 hp for 52K and 325 for 65K.
Beautiful car in the photos. The S well-optioned will begin to stray into 911 money.
