Default What is this ticking engine noise (audio)?

What the heck is this intermittent banging/ticking noise on my 997.2S? I only seem to hear it when I'm idling. Car has 18k miles on it only.

Sounds like a loose bracket or panel.

Does it increase in hertz rate when the engine rpm is raised?

It sounds like my ZO6 did which ended up having valve guides that were out of spec. GM replaced heads, valves, springs and lifters under warranty but they still don't know what caused my issues at only 4,200 miles on the odometer. They think the heads were milled out of spec or the guides were improperly inserted?

Three of my valves were not seated properly and were hitting on an angle which was causing that tapping sound. GM said that I caught it in time before my engine destructed.

It's best to have it checked out. The mechanic can check for oil on the spark plug threads as well as use a stethascope (spelling?) to listen to the valves.

After my ZO6 was repaired, I traded it in for my 911 GTS. I hope my Porsche does not end up having the same problem.

It does. It's still irregular and I'm not quite sure it's synchronous with the normal engine rhythm. Does that mean anything?

If the rate increases with the engine RPM then it sounds like something inside is out of adjustment. Thus, it is motor related and not something like a loose bracket or exhaust weld flapping in the breeze.

Dan: It could be internal, but the rattle was random, not periodic, and the sound pattern not consistent. An external rattle can also be influenced by a faster revving engine, depending on vibration resonance characteristics. Let's hope it is external.

Update: Turns out, it was the water pump! Dealer replaced it under warranty.

Interesting. Sorry you had this trouble.
Had the pump self-destructed?
Blades disintegrated?
Just wondering what, specifically, that noise was (in case I ever hear it in my car)?

AWESOME!! I have been trying to figure out what this noise was in my car for a while. Been scouring the web trying to find a sound clip AND a resolution.

Oh, I forgot to update this thread. It turned out it wasn't the water pump (noise came back). They actually couldn't figure it out. They had to replace the entire engine.
