Default Porsche trying to be an aston and vice versa

I came across an article and a show recently. The article talks about a small aston i think it was a db7 aimedsqyarely at competing with the 911. The aston had a .1 version to benchmark. The i saw the national geographic mega fatories of the one-77 and saw the car and the interiior... The one 77 show was ahead of the 991. The rear lights of the 991 reminded me of the astons. The interior of the 991 reminded me of the astons sloping dash. Hmmm. In the aston show, it was mentioned that the astons were more gt cars....the 991 though fast has been mentioned to have transformed into a gt car. The 997.2 might be the last 911 sports car as the 993 the last air cooled 911.
Porsche copying aston for the 911 and vice versa?

The 911 has been considered a GT (grand touring) car for decades.

Just another thread in which we're going to ' find out ' why the 997 is so much better than the 991...and that it looks like an Aston...or even better,I remember a thread where one thought it looked like a Corvette?! DUH!!! If you ask me,I think the 991 is trying to imitate the Hyundai Veloster! Give me a break!
On with the bashing...

The closest in size and performance that the 911 came to the Vantage was with the 997. The 997 was slightly bigger (in terms of length) and slightly faster. The 991 is even bigger and faster still. I don't see the two as growing toward each other or even remotely similar other than they are reasonably-similarly priced and both companies go racing.

Pretty much a moot point! Basically if you like it........buy it.......I don't so I won't. There.....easy as that!

So it appears that at least a couple of you guys are certain the 911 is a grand touring car, and has been so for decades. So how do you define a sports car? I think of both of my 911's as GT's, primarily because they are comfortable, fast, dependable, involving to drive with great weather protection and ample room for luggage. On the other hand, the race record of the 911, or more specifically, the time the new 991S recorded at the "N Ring", would argue that the 911 is at the very top tier of "sports car". I posted a question on the 991 forum asking for the difference between GT and sports car. Since you are sure the 911 is a GT, what is a sports car?

I would classify the Spyder as a sports car although ironically I would decribe it the same way you describe your 993 TT. The only exception is that you have to manually install the roof so weather protection will require 3 minutes and a small amount of effort.

The distinctions between sports car, GT, and luxury coupe have been getting blurrier and blurrier. At this point all of the major high-end automobile makers are competing for a customer base decimated by the economic events that have taken place since the start of the century. The only way they make it is if their cars appeal across former niche boundaries. So its not really a surprise that there are many similarities between Aston and Porsche. To Porsche's credit though, they have maintained a greater proportion of iconic identity than some others. Drive an Aston and a Jaguar coupe and 991 back-to-back, and you'll see what I mean.

Aston Martin built the Vantage to go head to head with the 911. I personally don't think Porsche is ever trying to be like Aston. I just read this months MotorTrend for best drivers car. The 991S won hands down beating all sorts of cars (Lamborghini, McClaren, GTR, C63 AMG, etc.). It was a unanimous win with all of the 8 judges picking the Porsche, including Randy Pobst. Hard to disagree with Randy in my opinion.

I liked Randy's quote:
"Holy cow, it makes all these other cars seem stupid! This 911 is so good, it just blows my mind! What a great-driving car!"

Now given his relationship and history with Porsche, perhaps there was some incentive for him to say that. Who knows. Like it or not, the 991 is for real.

I like the 991 but it's way more than I'm willing to spend on a toy/weekend car (need 4 doors and decent trunk for business). I was hoping it would be a runaway success and drive down the prices of second-hand 997's so I could move up from the 996, but I'm not seeing that happen

I completely agree. The prices have become extremely bloated.
