Here's a write up on the replacement of the alternator. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...placement.html
Looks straight forward... perhaps a 2-3 hrs job. Is there anything else they need to do besides just replacing the alternator? Ask them how much they charge for their techs per hour and how many hours they estimate the job will take.... I would guestimate this to be a 4 hrs job max @ $150/hr or $600 plus $400 for the alternator would be more inline = $1,000.
Do you have an independent Porsche shop in the local area where you could get a second opinion/quote from? GL and let us know the outcome.
Factory alternators do seem to be priced as if they are plated in gold (just quoted $1550 for a 99' Boxster)... But that seems waaay too high for a dealer job even with a factory unit. Figure $600-700 max for a good aftermarket alternator and around 3 hours labor. Usually works out to be $1100-1200 out the door.
It does seem high, but if you're using factory Porsche parts and dealer pricing, then I can see it going up that high.
I'd price it out at some reputable shops - it's really not a hard job or one the requires any special Porsche tools or knowledge.
