Default Steering wheel woes

So the car's been at my indy for a week now - in prime convertible weather. I decided to splurge and get the GTS sport wheel to replace the alumalook one. That of course is a next gen wheel, so you need the new control module as well. More $ - what the hell. Anyway, apparently you need to first download info from the old wheel, the install the new one, then upload the info - on a dealer computer. All of this was found out piecemeal over the last week, while spending enormous amounts of time trying all sort of things. Now it appears that the horn spring isn't working. FRUSTRATED doesn't even begin to describe it anymore.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I'm sure you've saved others who were going to try this a lot of aggravation.

That sucks! Maybe try to unload to a 997.2 user and swap yours to a GT3 wheel?

Sorry to hear of your frustration. Although indy shops are great for many things, it seems that some jobs may be better left to the dealer. Hard to know up front, though. Hope you get your issue resolved ASAP.

I'm really close to that. Just loathe to loose a bunch of $. BTW, just to clarify - the next gen steering wheels start in '10. '09 997.2s - like mine, use first gen. I know it can be done, a few people here have, and Suncoast said it 'should' work, but ...

You don't need a new controller. Just swap the wheel and be done with it, at least if your old wheel was a MF one. If not just activate the MF through piwis at your Porsche center. The new controller is causing all your problems.
My new wheel, very happy with the result:

Did you need a new airbag? Going from a 997.1 to a 997.2 wheel?
Looks great.

Looks great. Where did you purchase that wheel / airbag?

I can't seem to find them any where without the PDK paddles.

I love that wheel. I wish my car came with it, but I've gotten used to the buttons so I will hold off on getting the wheel til later. You're going to have to fight off all of the women this weekend while cruising with the top down.

I've got the plain old 997 steering wheel with the triangular middle. It actually looks fine to me, but the wheel itself just feels too skinny in my big hands. Been thinking about upgrading, but a new one with a new airbag and installation costs just too damn much...

If anyone's got an S steering wheel in beige sitting around, drop me a PM!
