Default Grinding going into 5th gear?

I am noticing that when the engine is cold, shifting in the 5th at about 65-70 mph it will make this quick nasty grinding noise. If I shift very slowly and gentle it won't do it. Once the oil temp reaches 200F it's not an issue.

What do you think it is? Shifter cable adjustment, need new gear fluid (68k on odo) or..?

How many miles are on the car? Could be a worn synchro. No grinding in other gears? Other possibilities include noot fully depressing the clutch or a worn throughout bearing but you would experience problems with other gears.

Syncronizer sounds like the culprit. Have you had your trans fluid changed yet?

Default Cables

I would start with
1. adjusting shifter cables
2. bleeding clutch
Cannot imagine much synchro wear on 5-th gear.
The 5-th gear is far out and forward, I'd bet my first born it's shifter cables. Either replace one of them or adjust. Best guess at the moment.
Changing tranny fluid always makes sense, even if that does not solve this very problem.
Cheers,

68k on your gear oil? I would have changed it 4 times already...

Really? How often does Porsche recommend trans oil replacement?

That's the problem, not often enough

While it could certainly be more than this, it sounds to me like you have a dead synchronizer. If it has been doing this for a bit then you can probably write off the operating sleeve, as well.

These are not terribly expensive to rebuild, but not exactly cheap either.

We have one built if you need to go the exchange route to save time.

I think the factory tranny change interval is about 100,000 miles. But there have been some who can benefit from a more frequent change.

Happens more prominently or less when letting revs drop to an appropriate RPM vs. not waiting quite as long as you should?

Sounds about right. Slow shifting or warm tranny- no grinding noise.
Calling Suncoast tomorrow and ordering gear lube.

Mine does this exact same thing. Only once during the first shift into 5th. After that no more.

I seem to remember my Carrera S doing that most of it's life. When warmed up she was fine. Let her warm up first and things should slide right in.

FYI, I just changed the fluid in my 6 speed. I only have 22k miles on my 2005 car. The fluid still looked good. But, there wasn't much in there. It's cheap insurance. It shifts like butter now. I got the fluid from suncoast. It's god awful stuff. It smells like ****.
