Default Muffler Install Question...

For those of you that have done a DIY install on the 997.1 mufflers. When you reinstalled the mufflers back:

1. Did you put the screws from the top down or from bottom to top. See pics below.

It seems to me that it would be much easier to have them go back in from bottom up as shown in the pics below. I do not wish to remove the entire frame. The question is, does it really matter how the screws go back in to hold the mufflers in place?

Thank you in advance.

John

I recently replaced my factory exhaust system with an aftermarket FVD system on my 997.1S. From the factory I recall that the bolts were top down which forced me to remove the three bolts holding the muffler frame to the car's sub-structure. I installed the aftermarket system with the same bolt orientation as the factory. It's actually fairly easy to remove the three bolts holding the frame in place.

I also removed the frame and kept the bolts as factory.

If you're referring to the bolts that have the "steel wool" insulation, I don't think it matters, as there is a tube sleeve inside the bracket, and the bolt is threaded such that you can't over-tighten it and smash the steel wool.
I wouldn't worry either way.

of course you reverse those bolts upside down so next time you can drop mufflers in 2 min instead of removing whole thing as you just did.

I never thought of dropping mufflers as a thing you would do "next time".
I just chose to replicate what was thought best from the factory.

I'm sure that both bolt placements are fine.

Well i removed the bracket but the right side was pretty rusted so it broke off.

Anybody have an extra bracket?

Thanks in advance.

What broke? one of the bolts on the bracket? if so then perhaps drill it through and replace with a new bolt if you can.

It has to be welded on there. I will stop by a muffler shop in the morning.

On high-vibration assemblies with no fastener locking device like a cotter pin or lock wire, I'd recommend from the top down. If the nut somehow backs off, at least the bolt wont fall out.
That's how I did it on military aircraft. An no, they don't all fly inverted.

You'll notice in high temp applications such as exhaust systems, there are few lock washers, etc. A couple of heat cycles and they don't budge anyway, so no need.
