1st, thanks for all the wonderful info...been lurking for 6 months before picking up my 997.2 C2-- 09 meteor gray pdk / black interior / 19" / bose / sport chrono / 17.5K miles. Got it for 60K which i think is a good deal. Pics to come soon. Moved up from a 328 convertible and it is night and day when it comes to handling and performance.
Anyways, I've searched prior posts on tinting, but wanted people's opinion on having the driver's side window tinted lighter than the rest of the car [what my local shop is recommending]. I am worried it will look a little 'imbalanced'. I am thinking of going pretty light 50% or 35%. I live in FL park outside @ work so a tint is necessary. In Fl I think 28% is the darkest tint for the driver's side window.
I personally wouldn't do it.
I'm also in Florida when in the US and went with a clear "tint" (film) from 3M. Much cooler with UV protection AND on the windshield as well. I think it's the best option. Simply being able to have some protection on the windshield is a great bonus.

Check your State's laws on tinting windows. Many states allow darker tint on the back window and rear side windows, but the front side windows must be lighter.
I have the same color car as you do (meteor gray/black) on my C4S and I went with a 35% tint all around. Not too dark as I don't like the diminished view at night but it does keep the heat down somewhat also when I was in Texas. Am now in WA so we'll see how it goes here in the NW. Here's a pic of mine pre-tint (at dealership prior to purchase) and post tint (out and about in town).

I did 50% side windows, 35% rear windows. This is what my tinter recommended to make it look like all the windows had the same darkness - he was saying that from the side, you're looking through two sets of tint films (both side windows), vs. from the back, you're only looking through one (rear window, assuming windshield is not tinted)...so the rear needed to be darker. .I think it looks pretty uniform this way to me. But I know a lot of people have the same tint darkness all around, and it looks good too.
Exceptional heat rejection without needing to go dark at all with Spectra PhotoSync from Prestige Film Technologies. We put this one to test against a 5% metallic window tint. Will also not affect wireless signals.

I have a question regarding tint on the 911. On a previous car tint on the rear window caused light refraction in the defrost lines in the evening with cars in the rear. Effectively, a car's headlights would cause lines of light at each defrost line. This was something that was unavoidable due to the thickness of BMW's defrost lines.

This is the nature of having window film placed onto a vehicle. However, certain cars have thicker defrosters as you have pointed out that can exacerbate this issue. On a side note, the light refraction is only visible at night time...daytime does not show.
