The issue of speeding is a complicated one. It is safe to go well over the speed limit where there is little to no traffic, long sight lines and no chance for another vehicle to enter the roadway from the side. The 40kph that was sighted is 25 mph. Around DC a few of the better highways have a 65mph limit. If you are going 90mph or above you will not be driving home if caught. From another angle, one is never sure what the speed limit is, cuz it is never the number on speed limit sign. Around these parts they usually give you 9 over, but there is no guarantee. It seems they are more lenient in the rain because they don't want to stand in it is my guess. Most people who are speeding are also paying attention. The real dangerous drivers are those who are texting while driving, and that is true whatever the speed, and don't get me started on left lane drivers!

The issue around that area, and the Pacific Northwest, is the roads are not as wide and visibility not as good as most of the US, so the chance of bad consequences is much higher. I suspect a history of bad accidents, especially on that stretch of road, has lead to increased enforcement, the way they do around the US on Labor Day or Memorial Day or the 4th of July. A history and knowledge that there are more knuckleheads out there on those days results in increased clap-downs.

My WAG is the cars got bit by the Bear in the Air! They were 'clocked' going way over the limit some time before the ground support officer directed the cars to pull over.
