Default Help Ceramic Brakes

Hello Folks
Two Questions. I have a 2007 997tt and I am trying to fit Ceramic brakes from a 2008 GT3 on my Steel brake car. I have purchased the Rotors and pads but was wondering if I would have any fitment issues?
Second question In shipping the R rear Rotor got a small 5/8 x 1/4" chip on the edge of the disc. Will I need to replace. Lord knows I hope not.

I believe you have to replace the rotor unfortunately! That's why many stay way.

For other items such as fitment, etc... I have no idea.

I agree the rotor cannot be used and will need to be replaced.

The switchover is not that straightforward. There is a brake balancing valve that will have to change the brake balance between the effort contributed by the fronts vise the rears. This is not a simple change. Also, the wheel bearings are different. The damage to the rotor concerns me a bit. I don't think the weight of that piece of siliconized carbon fiber represents enough to throw off the balance of that rotor, but it might. I would seek the help of a really smart Porsche guy who knows both PCCBs and iron brakes for the late model cars.

Rotor is done...have you price out replacement PCCB rotors yet? Sit down, double up on Xanax and chase it with a few beers or wine when you look at the price.

I think with that size chip the rotor will need to be replaced. Others have said you can use them with small chips but they really did not clarify a size. Was the shipment insured? I hope so given the cost to replace these things...

Thanks everyone for your input. Yes the package was insured but not for enough. Darn they want over $4000 for the rotor. Ouch.

I spoke to the dealer and he said the service spec on chip size is 2mm x 10mm He also said he has seen folks driving with larger chips due to careless tire changes and no issues? What is worst care if you drive with the chipped rotor? Your thoughts?

Possibly the GT3 or track forums on Rennlist would have a better idea. I suspect the brake pad could grab the defect, jam, and have your rear twist out on you. Who knows, right? I'd claim in the insurance for part of the replacement cost and have down with it.

Worst case? Rotor failure under high load, then death or maybe maiming. Nothing major;-)

I'm no engineer but I don't imagine a chip that size would actually pose a threat to the structural integrity of the rotor. That said, I'd never drive it on track like that.

Unfortunately sometimes the least expensive cure is the as perceived costly one.

I've only seen one rotor failure and it ended ugly.
