Default Test drove 991 & 981...

I have had my 997 C2 for 5 years and really wanted another Cab. Test drove a new 991 cab and really liked it and the new 7 speed manuel. Fast forward a month now the new Boxster 981 is out. Liked it so much I ordered one. Just couldn't see paying $40K more for the 991 Cab that in my opinon doesn't look as good as the Boxster in Cab form. No question the Boxster is more fun to drive. I know the 991 has more power, but I could care less about that as I hardly ever use what the 997 has to offer.

Is anyone else considering the 981 over the 991?

Yup!

And like you, it has to do with bang for the buck, and Euro delivery option. Plus frankly, I think the 981 is better looking.

the Boxster is an amazing car. However I DO need the grunt of the 3.8L.

No doubt the 981 is a really nice looking car. Probably the best looking roadster ever. If they ever make a turbo version I will be all over it. I doubt they will, As that would cust the legs out from under the 991 NA cars.

If I was buying new I would go with the 981. It's got rave reviews. Great Chris Harris video on YouTube.

It almost seems that Porsche is taking a play from Ferrari where the original, less expensive Dino had more aggressive styling than the expensive V12's of the era.

If I wanted a convertible I'd go with the 981.

Generally not a convertible guy but I have driven the 981 and it is a great car. I enjoy driving them but there are only a handful of times per year when I would enjoy the top down driving experience.

981 has definitely improved a lot more over last gen, while 991 hasn't improved to the same extent... hence much better value!

I'm definitely mulling it over vs. a used 997 cab at the same price point. I really wanted to do euro delivery, but am having second thoughts. That would put delivery into May (not much point in driving around northern Europe in a cab before that) and you loose the car for transit for a month after. Drove one on Sat. Great car. Hate the PDK.

With 75k miles on the C2S, I am also thinking about what is next. The 981 is amazing which means the Cayman is going to be much better than the current gen as well. Also, the 991 has gotten a bit too expensive. I know it's only a couple of thousand but it is a psychological thing.

With a wife and kid, though, for me if I got the 981 or the new Cayman I would also need to buy a sedan for the family days.

I am also doing the unthinkable and looking at other options, like the Evora S. But there are not a lot of options for sport 2+2.

Anyway, this whole decision process is part of the fun with cars!

Enjoy the torment!

No, sorry.
Love the new 981 though - absolutely gorgeous!
Just happen to love my 997 more. More room; back seat (to hold my "stuff"); and love the extra HP and torque!
I'd go for a 997.2 GTS next.
