997 with a lot of highway miles
Hi Guys,
I just bought my first Porsche—Grey 2005 911. The thing is it has 123k miles and no one would warranty it. Dealer has all the service records and IMS mail seal has been replaced recently, I’ve been told.
I’ve reading a lot on the forums and it looks like it’s possible that IMS may fail. That usually happens around 40k. I bought a higher mileage car because, it assume it’s been driven daily and well taken care of.
Did I make a mistake of buying a daily driver w/ a lot of highway miles ? Do I need to be prepared for any surprises?

In addition of truly enjoying the car, do the following:
- Get a record of IMS seal replacement. If not done recently, contact LN Engineering, and ask about their IMS kit. Do the upgrade, SPECIALLY IF your clutch is close to needing replacement. You cut the labour cost in half!
- Get LN Engineering magnetic drain plug and do it at next oil change (only $5)
- Ensure NOT TO USE 0W40 oil. Use Porsche approved 5W40, and do 5K oil change intervals.
- DRIVE THE CAR. Do not let it sit for a long time, that's receipe for oil leaks!
Otherwise, just enjoy the car! These cars are actually very reliable if maintenance is done regularly.

Do you guys know what is the cost to install the IMS kit ? It doesnt look hard !
IMO, why would buy IMS Guardian when you can install the IMS kit, only $300 difference.
Thanks a lot guys !!! BTW... I am from the Bay Area ! I am super excited as this is the first sport car since my Integra GSR in high school...

BTW, your car has traveled the equivalent of 5 times around the circumference of the earth! That's amazing.

I'm curious why you recommend 5W40 over 0W40? The only justification I've seen is if you plan on tracking the car during the summer use 5W40.

To #3 - M1 0W-40 is factory fill, and designed for these engines. I don't know why everyone fights this... Now for air-cooled 911s, I agree that it is not ideal due to ZN and P levels... (and yes to the 5k oil changes btw)
To #4 - my personal experience does not match this statement. If the car is kept in a climate & humidity controlled environment year round, the seals will not suffer from expansion/contraction. With 120K+ on the odometer, this car sounds broken in nicely!
Enjoy your new ride. Sounds awesome.

[QUOTE=Taxi?;9588933]I had the LN Engineering IMS Retrofit installed by an independent shop for $1100. See the LN Engineering webpage for authorized dealers. QUOTE]
Ditto for me. My Indy said most IMS failures are actually 100k+ cars, not to freak you out. If you do the IMS upgrade, it gets a little spendier because you almost have to replace the clutch while the tranny is out. And maybe even the RMS, since it's right there too.
