I hope you can give me some guidance as I'm really not sure what to do.

I'm ordering new tires and am considering Michelin PSS but I know they're not N Rated and my Porsche Service guy said that that's a big deal.

Can you please give me some thoughts.

Do a search of this forum for these tires. You'll find many glowing reviews (including mine).

 

Great tire, strong tire. Guys I know use this as a track tire. N Spec is a bunch of BS....I've got thousands of track miles and the tires are no N Spec.

Call Damon at Tire Rack...great service and he's sold hundreds of sets of Super Sport Michelins.

 

Get the PSS...awesome tires...wet, dry, track, road....you won't be disappointed...

 

The "N" designation is an automobile manufacturers designation that the tire has been approved by them, nothing more, although at least they've tested it, and it's rated for the cars top speed.
I have PSS's on a 09S, and they're a great tire.

 

Porsche service guy wants to sell some "N" tires from his stock...imo.

 

N Spec tires have met the manufacturer's engineering standards for that particular model they manufacture. N Specs will be different for each type of P-car, and typically dealers will only sell N Specs and no other "non N spec" tires.

 

I need a set of tires myself, and PSS will be the tire. It seems like the tire of choice for most. What is up with the N? Does Porsche withhold it, subject to a test or payment or something, or has Michelin not applied, or what? I am not an early adopter of anything, but I was waiting on the N designation. When is that going to happen? Is this symptomatic of a falling out or a love for BMW at Michelin-Spartanburg, or what?

 

I'm on my third set of PSS tires on my GTS. (Nothing wrong with the tires, the track eats them up but they do last longer than PS2's.) I was the first customer at my dealer with PSS tires, and they asked a lot of questions about them. They now sell PSS tires to their customers, despite the absence of an N rating. I've heard (can't vouch for accuracy) that a dealer can't CPO a car unless it has N rated rubber, so that might be a consideration if you're thinking of trading in the car during the life of the next set of tires.

Otherwise I'd ignore the issue. PSS tires are great. Handle better and appear to last longer than any of the N rated 997.2 tires (PZero, RE050 and PS2) and I've had them all.

My experience as well. Dealer (OPC) fitted PSS to my GTS (no one else can get the bloomin wheels off) and they are superior in every way.

 

N-spec tyres are developed in cooperation with Porsche to ensure the best performance of the tyre and vehicle together.
This involves fine tuning the handling characteristics to suit the car whilst also improving grip and performance levels.
Also, particular attention is given to improving noise/comfort levels, and more recently improving Rolling Resistance.
