Here's an odd one and before I run into the dealership I thought I'd run it past you guys.

Over the last couple of weeks I've noticed in enclosed parking areas, where the sound is good, that intermittently when I put on the brakes there is an odd 'grinding' sound followed by a gush of water' sound coming from what appears to be just behind the dashboard. WTF? Anybody have any idea what this is. The fact that it comes and goes is odd too.

Ideas?

My simple guess is that the hole for the water drain from the air conditioner condenser got plugged and you have some water in the pan

Ive also noticed this on my car a number of times. It's barely audible, and since the engine was in the back I assumed it couldn't be anything bad. Please let me know what's going on so I can get it fixed if necessary.

There are also other drain lines up by the battery. They could be clogged. Frunk full of water?

No water in frunk. Perfectly dry. Always garaged. Good idea on the A/C drains. Where would I find those?

when the car is moving or when the car is stopped. Are you hearing the sound right when you brake or afterward? Could you be hearing the the brake master cylinder or something?

My thoughts too. The "grinding" noise is during braking, then when the car stops there's the "water gushing" noise, almost as if the water is transfering from rear to fore. I doubt that it is two differenct problems as one always follows the other. On top of this, the problem is intermitent.

another possibility: is your fuel level low when you hear this? i can hear sloshing when stopping/accelerating from a stop i'm low. not sure about the grinding.

Grinding noise from braking is normal. Pads rubbing against the cross drilled rotors makes a sound for sure. Liquid sloshing sound is not normal, sounds like you have a clogged drain somewhere, completely unrelated to normal brake sound.

grinding noise could be the brakes getting rid of the surface rust on the rotors.

sloshing sound:

gas tank with less than 1/4 tank of fuel
AC condenser drain plugs clogged
heater core leaking coolant (the heater core is located right at the middle of the dashboard, inside the vehicle but you can access it from the front trunk area)

Is the carpet in the passenger area dry or wet?

I'll check but I don't think so. Anybody know how to check the A/C drain plugs on a 997.1?

Turn on your AC. Make sure "recirculate" in not active. And watch for water (condensation) to be draining from the bottom of your car's front end.

I'm gonna bet your passanger carpet is wet. If so, be careful and proceed with caution. There are some pretty expensive electronics under your seats.

Had a similar issue. Wasn't sloshing around, more like ticking/water circulating. Anyway, was the heater core. Flapper motor was replaced under warranty. All well. Usually you hear it when heat kicks on, some noise is normal. YMMV
