Why is it that the Carrera 4S down on horsepower and torque (385/310) when compared to its cousin, the Carrera S (400/325)? Also, is the difference apparent on the street?

I think You're talking about 2 different birds here.

Porsche's current Carrera 4S is still the 997.2 model; hence 385hp (just like the 997.2 Carrera S).

The current Carrera S is already the 991 model; hence 400hp.

This is exactly correct. You're quoting 997.2 numbers for the C4S as the 991 is not out yet, and 991 numbers for the C2S.

Carrera S 2009-2012 997 version is 385hp...GTS is 408hp...new 2012 991 version is 400hp...this is where you are getting confused with Porsche selling both the 997 and 991 versions side by side.

..... same thing happened for the 2005 model year..... C2 and C2S variants were 997.1 models while C4, C4S, Turbo were 996 models.
