You would have thought that they would have blanked out that tray for cars that don't have the phone module (which is likely a very high percentage of cars). I'm sure many have put a sim card in and wondered why it didn't work, not knowing their car didn't have the phone option.
This was an early attempt to provide for telephone capabilities in the 997. However, it simply never made sense in the North American market. In America, you get one SIM card for your mobile phone. In other markets you can order a second SIM card which you can leave inside that SIM card slot in the car. Can you imagine someone stopping to remove their SIM card every time they get into their Porsche? Not well thought out. The BlueTooth designs are far superior.
Not to generalize but Porsche has never been Bleeding edge on Bluetooth/Nav etc.. and other cockpit creature comforts.. that SIM slot and in the 997.2 is simply a " What were they thinking"
I always thought it was a bad move to leave the phone buttons and Nav buttons on cars that were built without the capabilities. For 80-90 grand back then , you would think Porsche could have installed a cleaner panel for the less optioned cars.
